Another name has been put forward as a potential signing for Manchester United this summer. Quincy Promes was the star of the show for the Netherlands U21 side in their 6-1 thrashing of Scotland’s U21 side. Promes scored himself a hat-trick, putting himself in with a chance or earning a place in the Netherlands senior side in their friendly with Ghana at the Stadion Feijenoord in Rotterdam on Saturday evening, which will be broadcast live on MUTV, before their final friendly against Wales at the Amsterdam ArenA on the 4th June, before embarking on their trip to Brazil for their opening match against Spain on the 13th June.
Promes, a 22-year-old winger who currently plays for FC Twente in the Eredivisie, seems to be a talented player and the hat-trick against Scotland will help ensure that Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal will notice him ahead of the tournament in Brazil this summer. The Dutch winger has represented the senior side once before in a friendly with France back in March. The Netherlands lost 2-0 in that fixture, but it was more about testing players ahead of the World Cup than wanting to get the better of France in that match.
Sky Sports spoke to Promes after the 6-1 victor over Scotland on Wednesday evening. The Dutch winger was asked about the link with Manchester United, as many Dutch players will be now considering a Dutch manager will be taking the helm at the club. The player was quick to suggest there was nothing in the rumours, but also seemed positive about the club. He said:
“Nope, I’ve heard nothing yet and my agent has heard nothing yet.
“Everyone wants to go to Manchester United. It is a nice club but it is nothing serious.”
Promes has just played his first full season at FC Twente, after spending the 2012/13 season on loan with the Go Ahead Eagles in the Eerste Divisie, where he made 19 appearances, scoring 13 goals in all competitions. Last season with FC Twente, he made 31 appearances, scoring 11 goals and assisting in a further eight. It would seem that there are many talented young players currently plying their trade in the Eredivisie, and it is only right that these players are linked with other clubs, but we must not get carried away with the rumours. I do expect Louis van Gaal to make a few signings this summer, for the better, but he already has some talented players who are on the fringes at United which he needs to make decisions on.
Whether Promes makes the move to Old Trafford this summer remains to be seen, but he does look like a talent and I would like to see more of him in the future, so perhaps it is a bit early to be considering him as a solid target at this moment in time, but in the future, who knows.
