Manchester United were put on red alert tonight after Spanish League correspondent Guillem Balague announced on Sky Sports’ Revisita La Liga that along with a large number of the Barcelona current squad, Cesc Fabregas is up for sale.
It is well-known that Barcelona are looking to revamp their squad this summer with Carles Puyol retiring and Víctor Valdés moving on. It leaves them woefully short of top class players in goal and at the heart of the defence and to generate funds for the overhaul they need to sell.
After failing to beat Atlético Madrid on the final day of the season they surrendered their league title to deserved winners. This had dire consequences for manager Gerardo Martino who paid the ultimate price of failure with his job and has been replaced by club legend Luís Enrique.
Balague went on to say that Fabregas would be sold if a club matched his €40m buy out clause and he agreed to the move, with his preferred destination being England. He also stated that Arsenal do not have first refusal on him and talk of his future is going to be rife over the summer months.
This is a player who United openly bid for twice last summer but were rebuffed both times. Strong rumours suggested that if United were to make a third and final bid that this would have been accepted by the Catalan club, but they were amazed that it was not forthcoming.
Interestingly United bid more than his apparent buy out clause last summer and could in fact get him for less this time around.
