Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has dismissed reports that he is about to sign for Manchester United this summer. Reports earlier in the week suggested that a deal was effectively done for the Belgian, who could cost around £10 million. It was understood that new United manager Louis van Gaal was keen on the defender, who is currently in Brazil with the Belgian side in their quest for World Cup glory, with the defender still yet to play. The 28-year-old has one year left on his current deal at the Emirates, but has played down any move at this time. Vermaelen told Sky Sports News:
“I know there has been a lot of talk and a lot of rumours but the only thing I can say is that it’s not true.
“Everybody understands my situation at Arsenal and that I have one year left.
“I understand that people are going to talk but I am here in Brazil and I am enjoying my time and I’m focused on what I am doing.”
Vermaelen also refused to divulge as to whether he has held talks with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger about his future at the North London club. He said:
“We talk a lot when I am at Arsenal but it’s not what I am going to discuss here, it is something you are going to have to ask him.”
Many United supporters seemed to be unhappy when the reports of Vermaelen signing for United were reported by various media outlets. Quite what the information was that the media were provided will make them red-faced at the moment in time seeing as the player suggests there is no substance to the reports, or was he just playing down the move so he could try and force himself back into the Belgium side for their next match at the World Cup?
