It was a frustrating afternoon for Manchester United as a resilient Burnley side held them to a goalless draw at Old Trafford. Despite 72% possession and 37 shots, the hosts were unable to break down a solid Clarets’ unit, led by former United Academy graduates Tom Heaton and Michael Keane.
The home side constantly pressed throughout the match against a Sean Dyche side that sat with ten men behind the ball as they clearly organised themselves to make the short trip home with a point to their name. Zlatan Ibrahimovic had numerous chances in the opening 45 minutes, but the best opening was created by Jesse Lingard as his effort was expertly tipped over the crossbar by Heaton. Cracks were beginning to appear in the United patience as Ander Herrera picked up a yellow card for a late challenge before Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands after complaining about a penalty appeal not given for a tackle on Matteo Darmian.
The second half followed a similar pattern with United creating all the openings but unable to find a breakthrough. Heaton pulled off an outstanding save to keep out Ibrahimovic, before both Juan Mata, who pulled the strings for the hosts throughout the afternoon, and Ibrahimovic hit the woodwork midway through the half. Frustrations soon appeared for United again as Herrera slid in recklessly once more to pick up a second yellow card.
Despite playing the last twenty minutes with ten men, United continued to search for a winner but it was not forthcoming as Burnley remained solid and Heaton unbeatable as the visitors picked up a crucial point.
