Wayne Rooney excited to work for Jose Mourinho

The buzz around Jose Mourinho’s appointment as Manchester United has not died down yet, and the latest to speak to the media about his appointment is United captain Wayne Rooney. Rooney, who is preparing for the Euros with Roy Hodgson’s England squad, looks forward to what is ahead after the Euros.

Speaking at a news conference ahead of England’s friendly match against Portugal, Rooney spoke about Jose Mourinho, who was appointed United manager on Friday. The Portuguese manager, who has won 22 trophies in his still young managerial career, is widely considered to be one of the most exciting managers in sports, and Rooney’s words seemed promising for fans and pundits alike.

“He’s one of the best managers in the world. It’s an exciting time for Manchester United. He knows the Premier League very well and I’m looking forward to it [working with Mourinho].”

United has progressively moved towards more proven managerial quality at the club, with Louis van Gaal seemingly a more proven option than David Moyes and now Mourinho joining the club. There are doubts around Mourinho’s appointment, but his track record of success and the currently occurring media frenzy surrounding his appointment.

However, before Rooney can join Mourinho at United, he must focus on his time with England at the Euros. England’s Euro campaign starts in nine days. In his news conference, Rooney spoke like the leader he is, as he looks to lead England’s young squad into the Euros.

“It’s a proud moment to captain the team heading into a tournament. It’s a young squad but it has got a lot of quality. I’m injury-free, whereas in a lot of tournaments I’ve had little niggles. I’m happy with my fitness and form.”

Finally, Rooney and England manager Roy Hodgson spoke about the rise of Marcus Rashford, as the forward was recently confirmed in England’s squad for the Euros this year. Rooney said it is remarkable that the now international striker has made such an incredible impact, and Hodgson, like many of us, said that he hopes Rashford’s inclusion can be a view into the future.

“The way Marcus took to coming into the Manchester United team and the way he’s performed from when he’s come in until the end of the season has been incredible. “He’s certainly showed what he can do in his first game for England, getting his first goal in the first couple of minutes. “I think what’s pleasing about him is his attitude. It’s first class and that’s shown around the hotel and on the training pitch and he deserves it. He could be a real positive for us.” Hodgson added: “Rashford’s had that fantastic end to the season and he’s a very interesting player. He has special qualities and I think that’s been recognised by everybody – and it will be very interesting to see in a squad of 23 whether or not he can bring those qualities to bear at an even higher level.”

Everyone is looking forward to seeing the topics covered in this particular press conference coming to life. Mourinho’s impact at the club, good or bad, will be massive, and it could be particularly large on Rooney, who had a poor 2015/16 season to his standards. Rooney is now playing the leader after being the student for so long in the national setup, and the scrutiny will be even greater this time around. Finally, United fans, in particular, are looking forward to seeing any potential Rashford cameos for England, and he could quickly become the Rooney-esque player who becomes integral in his young age.
