West Bromwich Albion looking to sign Manchester United’s Chris Smalling this summer?

West Bromwich Albion are looking to sign Manchester United defender Chris Smalling this summer but according to The Sun, the Premier League club are only considering a £10 million bid for the England international. Smalling who is currently 27 has slipped down the pecking order at United after Jose Mourinho signed Victor Lindelof this summer, a preferred partner to Eric Bailly, who arrived at the Theatre of Dreams last summer for a fee similar to that of Lindelof. United supporters are expecting both Bailly and Lindelof to form a partnership this coming season which could see them deemed worth as being compared to Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic for their physical partnership at the club which lasted a number of years.

The season before last, Smalling was United best player, in the final season under Louis van Gaal. The England international looked to have got over his shaky appearances and seemed to lead the defence, which left people suggesting that Bailly could come in as his partner at the start of last season with United seemingly much stronger. That was not the case though. Injury and a lack of form saw Smalling play a bit part in United’s defence with Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo dominating in defence at times with Eric Bailly and Rojo also forming a good partnership ending with Bailly and Daley Blind in the centre of defence, which worked too. At the time it looked as if Smalling no longer had a part to play in United’s defence.

Smalling, a former Fulham player is at the top of West Brom manager Tony Pulis’ list for a new defender, possibly to partner former United teammate Jonny Evans, who has played well for the Baggies since leaving the Theatre of Dreams two summer’s ago. The Baggies played in the Premier League Asia Cup, which was won by Liverpool on Saturday with Pulis’ side coming fourth. As soon as Pulis and his team return to England, they are expected to launch an official bid for the England international, which may be something many will be happy about being that as soon as Rojo is fit, which should be in December, perhaps even early into 2018, Smalling will be further down the pecking order.

Pulis reportedly knows that he will have to move quickly for Smalling with a few other Premier League clubs interested in the central defender, which could even spark a bidding war for the player with United taking more for him, which would be a turn up for the books. Pulis is said to have wanted to sign former Chelsea captain John Terry, but the player’s reluctance to play for another Premier League team scuppered the deal with the player signing for Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa instead. Pulis was also interested in Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma who signed a new deal with the Premier League champions this week, but Mark Hughes of Stoke City signed the player on loan for the entirety of the 2017/18 season instead. Pulis needs to land Smalling to strengthen his defence.
