William Carvalho linked to Manchester United, but who isn’t this summer?

Manchester United and Arsenal are reportedly leading the chase for William Carvalho this summer with West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers also interested in the Portuguese midfielder. Portuguese newspaper, Record, have claimed the free agent after terminating his contract with Sporting Lisbon after fans attacked the team at their training ground, report that Carvalho could be heading to the Premier League this summer.

Along with Carvalho, Bruno Fernandes, Gelson Martins, Rui Patricio, and Bas Dost have all terminated their contracts with the Portuguese club which also saw manager Sinisa Mihajlovic sacked after just nine days in the job. Currently playing for Portugal in the FIFA World Cup in Russia, Carvalho could join a Premier League club after Portugal’s involvement in the tournament. Carvalho has been strongly linked to United in the past and last week there were reports of the club seeking a young box-to-box midfielder, which could, in fact, be anyone.

Carvalho’s stock has fallen since he was suggested to be a player United were going to sign some years ago. More recently, the player was linked to West Ham which I guess would show that many big clubs were not interested in him at the time. United’s interest is probably nothing other than adding the name of the club to a report which will drive more attention. If Manchester United are said to be interested in a player, it helps market the player and drive up attention.

The report in the United Kingdom, carried by The Sun added that Arsenal, working on a small budget under Unai Emery could well be interested in the free agent, as would European heavyweights AS Monaco, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Marseille and FC Porto. The player has probably only been linked to Wolves because of their involvement with super agent Jorge Mendes and the fact that they have already signed Rui Costa, formerly of Sporting and also currently playing for Portugal in the World Cup.

Is there anything to see here? I am not convinced. There are literally hundreds of players linked to Manchester United at this time of the year. With reports that Marouane Fellaini will sign a new two-year contract with the Old Trafford club this summer, it would be unlikely that another midfielder would sign for the club added to the fact that Jose Mourinho has Nemanja Matic, Fred, Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera, Fellaini, Scott McTominay and possibly Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who could fortify a position in midfield.
