Zlatan Ibrahimović is a “leader” at Manchester United

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Manchester United have a new leader in the dressing room in the form of sensational Swede Zlatan Ibrahimović according to Ander Herrera. Herrera has expressed his joy at being able to share a dressing room with the 34-year-old and has praised the influence that he’s already had on the squad in the short amount of time that he has been around at training. Ibrahimović arrived at United last month on a free transfer after letting his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expire at the end of last season.

“We are going to follow Ibra because we have one of the best players in the world and we have a big leader in our dressing room with him.”

Ibrahimović made an instant impact at United, scoring, just 4 minutes in to his debut against Galatasaray  in Gothenburg on Saturday, in the game that ended as a 5-2 victory for United. The finish was a sublime scissor kick, leaping into the air to meet Antonio Valencia’s cross. Spectacular finishes are a key part of Ibrahimović’s arsenal, and for this reason, Herrera was not surprised to see such a special finish from the Swede. Fans of The Red Devils will be hopeful of seeing more finishes similar to this over the coming season, as Ibrahimović’s moments of magic will be capable of winning games single handily.

“I wasn’t really surprised he scored such a wonderful goal because I have watched him for a long time.”

Ibrahimović is famed for his sheer arrogance, which allows him to do things on a football pitch that not many other can do, or have the confidence to even attempt, Herrera believes that this attitude can benefit the whole squad, as every single player can learn something new. Although, Herrera thinks that the player who may benefit the most from Ibrahimović’s arrival could be Marcus Rashford. Rashford is still only 18 years-old and the chance to share a pitch with Ibrahimović and learn from him in training every day can only be a positive thing for the young striker.

“The likes of Marcus Rashford can learn a lot from him. And not just Marcus. We are all going to learn from Ibra.”

Herrera also labels Ibrahimović as a legend and acknowledges that he has a unique opportunity to work with a player with a player with a player of the calibre of United’s number 9. Ibrahimović has won league titles all over Europe, so to be able to share a dressing room with someone who has that winning mentality.

“It is a unique opportunity for me to learn from a legend like him and I hope to take advantage of that.”

Herrera has started all of United’s pre-season friendlies so far, a move from Jose Mourinho which is sure to boost the Spaniard’s confidence. He was constantly in and out of the squad under Louis Van Gaal, so giving him a run of games will allow him to show his true quality and hopefully, cement a place in Mourinho’s plans for next season.
