Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed that he had several offers on the table when he announced he would be leaving Paris Saint-Germain, but the chance to work under Jose Mourinho once again but this time at Manchester United was just too good to turn down. The Swede has admitted that his good friend and former Red, David Beckham, who Ibrahimovic played alongside at PSG, gave him a call in an attempt to take the 34-year-old to the USA to play for his proposed Major League Soccer side, Miami. The striker politely declined Beckham’s offer, although, he has refused to rule out playing in the MLS before his illustrious career comes to an end.
“David is a good friend of mine, and he has asked me to play for his (Miami) team. For now, I want to achieve big things with Manchester United, but I have a lot of respect for the MLS, and anything is possible.”
The goal-scorer hit the back of the net a remarkable 50 times in 51 appearances last season in the Ligue 1 so it was to be expected that many teams would be fighting for the signature of one of world football’s biggest names. As it is known, the forward certainly does not lack confidence and that was portrayed in a comment he made about it being normal for him to have several sides battling for him. However, it is also known that Mourinho and Ibrahimovic have a special relationship and United fans, including myself, are excited at the prospect as to how their connection may blossom even further in the Premier League.
“I am not ruling out the MLS, once I had decided to leave PSG there were many offers, but with Zlatan that is normal. I know that teams from the MLS were interested, but the opportunity to play for Manchester United, and of course to work with my good friend Jose Mourinho again, was impossible to turn down.”
Ibrahimovic, who quite often speaks about himself in the third person, has recently retired from international football where he netted an impressive 62 times in 166 games, but the player insists he is in a pristine physical condition.
“I would never rule out the MLS in the future. I have a contract with Manchester United, but I feel in great shape.”
Personally, I feel that Manchester United signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a fantastic move by the club – commercially and on the football pitch. He one of the most well-known footballers across the globe so him playing for arguably the biggest club in world football will no doubt send Ibrahimovic shirt sales through the roof. But, of course, where it matters the most is on the field and there too, I can see United’s new number nine being a success. This is his chance to claim a title in all four of the world’s biggest leagues and it is also his opportunity to prove doubters who claim that he can only do it in the leagues where teams are not as strong, respectively, wrong.
His experience and know-how is also something our younger forwards such as Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial will thrive off, I can imagine the Swedish-born superstar will be eager to share his stories and techniques on the training ground in order to teach the young stars new things. Furthermore, in football, there’s signings that can lift a side and get everybody on their high horse and Ibrahimovic could well be the man that could do just that for Manchester United. Finally, with the Portuguese manager, Mourinho, having such a special connection with the striker, is there anyone better out there that could get the best out of Ibrahimovic during his later footballing years? I would think not. For now, there are only positive indications off the back of securing the Swede’s signature, so I for one am delighted that he snubbed all offers to join Manchester United.
