Alvaro Morata’s representatives meet Real Madrid over summer transfer

Manchester United’s summer transfer window seems to have stalled after the signing of Victor Lindelof for £30.7 million from Benfica around a fortnight ago. There have been rumors of Ivan Perisic, Fabinho, Nemanja Matic and Alvaro Morata all lined up by Jose Mourinho to arrive at the Theatre of Dreams this summer. With Real Madrid striker Morata still on his honeymoon amid reports of him flying from Ibiza to Madrid last week to push his transfer through to United, not his agent, Juanma Lopez and Alfonso Morata, the player’s father both met with representatives of Real Madrid on Monday morning to discuss the striker’s future.

United manager Mourinho is looking to sign Morata this summer as the permanent replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic whose career at United was ended in April after he suffered a serious knee injury. The Swede scored 28 goals in all competitions last season, helping United on their way to winning the FA Community Shield, scoring the winning goal in that match, also helping to lift the EFL Cup back in February, scoring twice in that match. Ibrahimovic was not able to play in the UEFA Europa League on the 21st May 2017, but his goals in the competition went a long way to helping the team lift the trophy, the Swede being present in Stockholm to help the celebrations of Mourinho’s first season continue.

Reports suggest that Morata is keen to link up with Mourinho at United this summer in a bid to prove himself and show that he should be playing for Spain ahead of next summer’s FIFA World Cup in Russia, which the striker will want to lead the line in. Morata did not play all that regularly for Real Madrid last season, despite scoring 20 goals in all competitions, he came off the bench in more than half of the matches he played for the club who won the La Liga title and retained the UEFA Champions League trophy, the first time that has been done since the rebranding of the European Cup. Sky Sports suggest the meeting in Madrid last 50 minutes with the 24-year-old’s future up for discussion.

Morata is currently on his honeymoon after marrying model Alice Campello in Venice last month, the player has been in Ibiza and is now in Sardinia. United and Real Madrid have reportedly held talks for the Spanish international for at least a month with rumours suggesting the deal is not all that far off with completion days mooted, which had passed with nothing happening. The Madrid club are looking for €80 million (£70 million) for Morata this summer, with United reportedly wanting to pay around £60 million, but had a bid of €60 million (£52.4 million) rejected. £60 million would be a good fee for the player considering he is more of a peripheral figure at the Santiago Bernabeu, but Real Madrid seem to want to fleece as much as they can for the player.

Morata would jump at the chance to play for Manchester United and Jose Mourinho and should a fee be agreed, personal terms would not be an issue for the player, according to reports with many suggesting the transfer is all but done, which in simple terms means it is not done. Three days into July and United have only signed one player, it means supporters start to panic as time is running out. I mean the window closes at the end of August, it is not as if United have a matter of hours to complete deals. Yes, having deals completed early is great, but whilst the player is still on holiday, nothing can surely be done until he returns anyway.

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is keen for the player to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer but Morata is desperate for more game time, which the French manager cannot guarantee, with Mourinho able to do just that. United will head to Los Angeles on Sunday for a pre-season training program ahead of their tour of the United States of America in which they will face LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake in friendly matches before facing Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona in the International Champions Cup. United will then return to Europa where they will face Valerenga in Oslo, Norway, Sampdoria in Dublin, Ireland before heading to Macedonia to take on Real Madrid again for the UEFA Super Cup at the start of August.
