Benjamin Mendy on Manchester United’s radar, but they may need to move fast

Benjamin Mendy is one of the players that has excelled himself at AS Monaco this season with the side beating Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 title this season. Mendy is a player who is wanted by Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and now Chelsea – and probably others. The left-back position is a problem area for Manchester United and Jose Mourinho with Luke Shaw not getting back into the swing of things at the club with his devotion to the club being questioned amongst a lack of form and fitness, not to mention the many injuries he has suffered recently, including the double leg fracture sustained when United last played in the UEFA Champions League. Danny Rose has been linked to United, as has Mendy, a possible player to make United into a French revolution with Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and quite possibly Antoine Griezmann this summer.

What is being reported and by who?

The Sun reported that Liverpool and Manchester United were to rival Manchester City for Mendy for a reported £39 million fee. City seemed to be in the driving seat for the player, especially after signing Bernardo Silva last week and also retaining their interest in Mendy and others at the principality club. The Daily Star suggested that City were ‘confident’ of landing Mendy ahead of other rival Premier League clubs. The Sun have also reported Chelsea’s interest in the player. The Daily Mail have reported that City were looking to finalise the deal for Mendy, securing their third transfer this summer, the second from Monaco (the second player being goalkeeper Eduardo of Benfica). With all clubs interested in Mendy participating in the UEFA Champions League next season, well Liverpool will need to qualify for the group stages first, he will have a decent set of English clubs to choose from, providing he wanted to move that is. SportWitness report different news on City’s pursuit of Mendy, suggesting that the ‘oil-rich’ club have failed to negotiate wages with Mendy, which have meant that Jose Mourinho, looking to get one over Pep Guardiola, is set to strike for Mendy, well Ed Woodward would be the one doing the deal, should United’s interest be true.

What type of player is Benjamin Mendy?

Benjamin Mendy is a left-back for AS Monaco and played a big part in their rise this season to take on Paris Saint-Germain for the Ligue 1 title, which Monaco won. Mendy is a great player to have in a team and you can see why the likes of United, City, Liverpool and Chelsea are looking at him, probably among other clubs. Mendy is a great crosser of the ball, a strong passer, creating some key passes for his teammates. He can also dribble with the ball and is a great defensive attribute to his side. Mendy can shoot from distance, so when you look at his defensive nature and attacking ability, any team he joins will get a player worth their salt and one who will play a big part in their season. City seems to have a big interest in him, but the fact they have not agreed on wages with the player could see another club, United maybe, jump in and try and strike a deal with the player and his club. Mendy would be a great addition, but right now, I just don’t see United in the race, but things can change in a day,

Likelihood of the transfer?

Manchester City might still get their man yet, so the likelihood of Manchester United signing him will not have moved any further forward. The fact will remain that Mendy will be looking for a club that fits his aspirations as a footballer, right now that would probably rule out Liverpool as they are the only Premier League club interested in him who don’t seem to be able to challenge for trophies. If wages are the falling point for City, they were either offering a pittance of a wage, which would be unlikely, or the player is a mercenary looking to make a mint for himself, which in all honesty would not be what any clubs wanted. Mendy is a Monaco player at this moment in time, and the likelihood is that he will leave the club this summer, but right now, any team could come in and get the deal done. I still think he will sign for City as they seem to be intent on getting the deal across the line as their need for a full-back is greater than many, seeing three of them will leave the club this summer.
