Bruno Fernandes wants to ‘play in England’ as Sporting president sets his price for the midfielder…

Bruno Fernandes has expressed his interest to play in England. On Monday evening, the 24-year-old and his Sporting CP teammates left Lisbon for New York ahead of the clubs pre-season friendly against Liverpool at the Yankee Stadium. Manchester United have been linked to the midfielder all summer and it could start hotting up now.

There have been many rumours coming out of Portugal linking Fernandes to United this summer, from an €80 million offer, which was seemingly not the case based on the reports which followed, to suggestions that things are getting closer to being completed. Of course, nothing has happened in months, which gives me suspicion.

Fernandes’ agent, Miguel Pinho has been travelling between Portugal and England a lot recently, according to reports, something that has added many a laugh about the saga, which is what this has become. Earlier on Monday, it was reported that Sporting president, Frederico Varandas was ambushed by the media on his way to New York. He told RTP, reported by Sport Witness:

“I don’t know if there are many or if there are few [interested clubs]. What I know, a lot has been spoken of values, coming to the press, €55 million, €62 million, for that he doesn’t leave, for sure.”

Later on Monday, A Bola did the same to Fernandes, who was heading to catch the flight to New York ahead of the Liverpool match on Thursday. It was then that he announced his interest in playing in England, presumably the Premier League. He also said something which seems to be taken in the wrong way. Fernandes actually said:

“The president decides that, not me. I don’t care about the market, I’ve talked about this many times. The only thing I can do now is catch the plane so I don’t miss it.

“Will this be the last match for Sporting? I don’t know, it’s the coach who decides. I told you I’d like to play in England, but that’s not what interests me. It may be when the club decides.”

Sport Witness state that when Fernandes stated ‘that’s not what interests me’, he is actually talking about his concentration on the task in hand; pre-season. He wants to remain committed to the club and the club’s supporters and give his all before any sale is concluded – which is the professional thing any player should be doing.

It could be that this saga is hotting up, which is something Sport Witness states based on Varandas talking about ‘supposed offers’ and ‘setting his price stance’ but also Fernandes himself who has seemingly made it clear that he favours a move to England this summer. Something could be about to happen at a time where interest in this deal is wearing a bit thin.
