Daniel James agrees terms with Manchester United; fee yet to be agreed with Swansea City – report

Manchester United has reportedly agreed on personal terms with 21-year-old winger Daniel James. The Swansea City forward has been on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s radar for a number of weeks after his move to Leeds United was not completed in January. The player has also received interest from Brighton and Hove Albion this summer.

It is also reported by the media that a £15 million fee is close to being agreed between United and Swansea although the Welsh club has suggested that there is no such agreement in place and that the player remains a Swansea player. James has one year left on his current contract so if Swansea want to get any money for him, they will need to sell this summer.

The lure of the Premier League will be a big one for James and playing for United will be something that could propel him to the pinnacle of English and European football, provided the rebuild that will start this summer is actually completed without the players giving up again and seeing another manager sacked, which is probably likely to happen if a clear out of these players and the deadwood does not happen.

Many so-called supporters of the club, some of whom have been suggesting that buying ready-made talent and seemingly world-class players has not worked so United will need to look into signing young talent which can be developed, have themselves been mocking this prospective deal suggesting that going head to head with Brighton for James shows the level the club has sunk to.

It does not suggest anything like this for myself. I look at the talent of the player, especially his pace and think about what could become if he hits the ground running. Imagine a player on the pitch who is proud to wear his shirt and fight for the club. There are few of them in the squad at this moment in time. It will be refreshing. It is clear that bringing egotistical players to the club has not worked and is not working.

It is suggested that a prospective deal could be close for James and United but other reports suggest that there is still a lot to be done to get the deal across the line. Some reports suggest that James is viewed by United as ‘potential’ and that they could look to sign a player more established than James, so the entire situation seems to be confusing but I guess that is the English media for you – like a Chinese whisper at times.
