Fred The Red: Manchester United confirm Fred as Jose Mourinho’s second summer signing

Manchester United have today confirmed their second summer signing, Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk. The Brazilian, who played for his country against Croatia at Anfield in a friendly on Sunday, which Brazil won 2-0, was allowed to leave the training camp ahead of the FIFA World Cup to undergo a medical at the Old Trafford clubs Aon Training Complex in Carrington on Monday. Fred is one of a possible two central midfielders Jose Mourinho would need to sign this summer, replacing both Michael Carrick, who has retired and Marouane Fellaini, who is a free agent this summer.

Fred, 25, signed for Shakhtar Donetsk in a €15 million fee in 2013, coming from Brazilian side Internacional. The Brazilian has played for the Ukrainian club for five seasons, playing a total of 156 times, scoring 14 goals. During his club playing career, Fred has won 12 major honours, starting with the Campeonato Gaúcho in 2012 and 2013 with Internacional, and with Shakhtar Donetsk, the Ukrainian Premier League three times (2013/14, 2016/17, and 2017/18), three Ukrainian Cups (2015/16, 2016/17, and 2017/18), also three Ukrainian Super Cups (2013. 2014, 2015, and 2017).

Fred has played eight times for Brazil, twice this year (including Sunday’s victory over Croatia). He made his debut for Brazil in 2014, playing two times, doubled that with four appearances in 2015, but not playing for his country in 2016 or 2017, returning to action for his country earlier this year. Fred is a strong passer, holds a great defensive contribution for his team, he passes the ball well and attempts long shots at goal. His main weakness is aerial duels but there are other players to strengthen that in the United squad currently.

The Brazilian 25-year-old’s style of play shows that he likes to tackle, he also likes to dribble with the ball, he is good at laying off the ball, and is a counter-attacking threat. However, he gets fouled often, which is something that could continue to happen in the Premier League, especially is he adapts to the playing style of the league and shows his ability, which will be one of the reasons that Jose Mourinho was interested in the player this summer.

Speaking to the official Manchester United website about his transfer to the Old Trafford club, Fred said:

“This is the biggest club in the world and I am delighted to be a part of this amazing team. To work with Jose Mourinho, who has won so many trophies in his time as a coach, is an opportunity not to be missed.

“I cannot wait to get started and to meet my new team-mates. I would like to thank everyone at Shakhtar Donetsk for everything they have done for me over the past five years. This is a very exciting time for me with my focus now fully on the World Cup with Brazil.”

Jose Mourinho, speaking about his new summer signing, said:

“Fred will complement our other midfielders’ qualities, which we need; his creative brain and passing vision will give us another dimension to our game. I am very happy he is joining our club and I believe our players know how important he can be in our team.”
