Ivan Perisic pursuit off according to Luciano Spalletti

Manchester United have been linked with Inter Milan’s Croatian winger Ivan Perisic for months now. The move was tipped to happen, then it didn’t happen. It was on. It was off, which is where it seemingly stands right now. It was reported earlier in the day that Inter manager Luciano Spalletti has ‘admitted defeat’ in the Perisic saga meaning that he will not be held against his will at the San Siro if he really wanted to leave. It seemed that it was only a case of time before the Croatian winger would arrive at Old Trafford ahead of the new season, but those reports were short-lived. The Mirror reported on Friday afternoon that Spalletti had given the green light for Perisic to leave the club, saying:

“I know him well, everyone knows him. For me, the talk is always the same when it comes to him. He’s strong, he’s a player I want to keep with me, but then we must consider the opinion of the club and the player. We want to keep him, but a lot of considerations have to be made. I can’t say for sure if he is going to stay or not.”

There were also reports that Inter would demand Anthony Martial be included in the possible deal, on a loan spell for the entirety of the 2017/18 season, which would be a poor deal for United. Martial would play a lot of matches in Italy but he would still play at United and with strengthening the position Perisic plays in, which is similar to that of Martial, who can also play as a striker, the squad would be weakened at the same time, which would be a stupid deal. Martial intends to remain at United this coming season, previously ruling out an exit from the Theatre of Dreams, which would also scupper this deal. The Mirror reported:

“Inter Milan want Anthony Martial in exchange for Ivan Perisic. The Italian giants want a loan deal plus cash with Manchester United struggling to meet their £45million valuation of their Croatian winger.”

In another report on Friday, this time in the evening, The Mirror had reported that the chase for Ivan Perisic was off, as stated by Spalletti as United had not followed up their interest in the player, which now looks like the media have been reporting about the transfer with no actual information of that being the case. Spalletti stated that there was no chance of a move being completed if United had not even contacted the San Siro club for Perisic. The Inter manager said:

“Until now, there hasn’t been any important contact. There was something you already know about at the beginning of the window [but] there was no follow-up and so, for me, the topic is over. It’s true as time goes by, it becomes more and more difficult to replace him with another player. I will strongly oppose the sale of Perisic if an offer comes.”

United must be up to something in the transfer market if Perisic, who was not for sale, left for China on the club’s pre-season tour and is now seemingly available, or at least was if United followed up their interest and made an offer for the player. There are reports linking United to Gareth Bale, but that is not something I believe but the media will be banging on that drum for the foreseeable future as it will increase their hit rate for articles, which in turn will increase their revenue, all from pushing reports which are based on supposition, possibly not actual facts. I am sure we will start to see some developments in the coming days. If you follow Twitter, this week was supposed to be a big one for the clubs recruitment this summer, another week which has come and gone.
