Jose Mourinho to be handed £80 million to fill the gaps in his team, according to reports

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will be handed £80 million to fill in the gaps in his squad during the January transfer window, according to reports. The Sun, at least in their opinion, have confirmed the Portuguese manager thrashed out the plans for the upcoming January transfer window in a meeting with chiefs at the Old Trafford club last week. United are aiming to keep the challenge with Manchester City for the Premier League title alive, sitting eight points adrift of their noisy neighbours after 15 matches in the league this season.

It is suggested that Mourinho would like to bring in a left-back, a winger for the right side and a creative midfielder to take hold of the number ten position. Luke Shaw is United’s current left-back, but after failing to impress the manager, he has been used sparingly this season with Ashley Young, Daley Blind, and Matteo Darmian all having time in that position – Young impressing the most. Shaw could be restored into the squad for tonight’s clash with CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Champions League after the manager confirmed he had been working hard for a chance.

It is suggested that both Darmian and Shaw could be used to boost Mourinho’s transfer budget with the pair being linked to different clubs in the past few weeks. The Sun, using quotes from a supposed Old Trafford source, claim they have been told the following:

“Jose [Mourinho] met with some of the club’s top brass including Woodward last week and could have a pretty penny to spend.

“It sounds like some of the summer budget is being advanced into January. Jose is also looking to get rid of some players.

“Shaw and Darmian are in the firing line. There‘s a few key positions he wants to fill throughout the squad.”

Last week there were reports that Newcastle United were interested in Shaw, but baulked at the £20 million valuation of the player, whose contract runs out at the end of the season, but there is a clause in his contract at the club that a further year could be added on by either party, which has been present in contracts of new signings and players signing new contracts since Louis van Gaal became the manager of the club in the summer of 2014.

It is also reported that Darmian has many suitors, including Sevilla and Roma, with United looking to recoup £15 million for the Italian, who was signed by Van Gaal in the summer of 2015, with his contract expiring in the summer of 2019, he also has the one-year add-on clause in his contract. United are never really an active club during the January transfer window, signing few players during that period in the past, but everything can change, especially in the areas United have fallen short of this season.
