Manchester United complete deal to sign Harry Maguire for £85 million – reports

Manchester United have completed a deal to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City this summer, according to Sam Wallace and John Percy of the Telegraph. It has been reported that a deal was agreed this morning which will see the Old Trafford club spend £85 million on the England defender. The saga could well be over, for this particular player anyway.

On Thursday, it was reported that the player would miss a pre-season friendly against Atalanta on Friday evening. The 26-year-old has been United’s top target at this stage of the summer transfer window with the club still linked to Bruno Fernandes and Paulo Dybala, the latter being a swap deal involving Romelu Lukaku.

The fee will be a world-record transfer for a defender, topping the £75 million Liverpool paid for Virgin van Dijk during the January 2018 transfer window. It is suggested the £85 million fee will be the basic fee, presumably with add-ons to follow, which will be an expensive deal for United, considering they could have signed the player last summer. Although Simon Stone of BBC Sport suggests the fee is £80 million.

United needed to strengthen the defence this summer, especially after conceding more than 50 goals in the Premier League alone last season. It was clear that a partnership of Victor Lindelof and either Chris Smalling or Phil Jones was not going to work and the injury problems of Eric Bailly were casting him as a doubt also. I have high hopes for Axel Tuanzebe to be promoted to the first team.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be somewhat happy with the news that he has signed his third player of the summer with less than a week of the summer transfer window remaining. United has signed Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka already this summer with the squad needing more strengthening across the board and Maguire will do some of that.

It was reported earlier in the day that the deal for Maguire will rest on two other transfers. It seems that Brighton and Hove Albion look set to sign Adam Webster from Bristol City for £22 million, according to The Mirror with Brighton defender Lewis Dunk the chosen replacement for Maguire. Perhaps those deals are now done which allowed Leicester to agree on a deal with United?
