Manchester United complete the signing of 19-year-old Diogo Dalot

Manchester United have announced the signing of 19-year-old Diogo Dalot from FC Porto, Jose Mourinho’s first signing of the summer, which was expected to be Fred. On Monday, the Old Trafford club confirmed there is an agreement for Brazil midfielder Fred to transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk with the Portuguese manager moving swiftly in the transfer market in order to fix some problems in his squad ahead of the new season. Dalot has been linked to United for around a week or so with the under-the-radar signing surprising many.

Dalot was due to be the main right-back at Porto this summer after Leicester City signed 24-year-old Ricardo Pereira earlier in the transfer window. It even seemed to be a surprise for Porto, who had a release clause in Dalot’s contract of just €20 million, something which United were said to have activated, but had not at that time. The release clause would be around £17.5 million and it has been suggested by Porto that United have paid €22 million for the player.

Despite Mourinho being keen to bring in a right-back, left-back, central defender, two midfielders and possibly an attacking player this summer, the signing of Dalot has suggested that the right-back position was not as urgent a position to be filled, hence why an unknown and seemingly unproven player has been signed. Dalot can play in the left-back role also, he played seven times in that role during the past season, covering for an injured teammate. Perhaps Mourinho sees him as a player who could add more to his team, even at this stage of his career.

Dalot has signed a five-year contract with the option of a sixth year to be added at a later time. Speaking about his new summer signing, Mourinho, as reported by the official Manchester United website, said:

“Diogo [Dalot] is an extremely talented young defender with all the qualities to quickly become a great player for this club. He has all the attributes that a full-back needs: physicality, tactical intelligence and technical quality, combined with a Porto Academy mentality which prepares players for the maturity they need at the professional level. In his age group, he is the best full-back in Europe and we all believe he has a bright future ahead of him at Manchester United.”

Dalot, speaking to the official Manchester United website about his new challenge, said:

“Joining Manchester United is an unbelievable opportunity for me. I have grown up in Porto’s Academy and I am so thankful for everything they have done for me. But the chance of coming to the biggest club in the world is something I just couldn’t turn down. I’m excited about working with Jose Mourinho and learning everything I can from such a successful coach. I am looking forward to playing alongside the fantastic players in the squad.”
