Manchester United could be tempted by £36 million fee for Sevilla striker Wissam Ben Yedder if Romelu Lukaku leaves

Manchester United are reported to be considering what would be seen as a shock swoop for Sevilla striker Wissam Ben Yedder this summer. The 28-year-old is also linked to both Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona. It is suggested that both PSG and Barcelona may not be able to offer his guaranteed football but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could if Romelu Lukaku leave the club this summer.

France Football has already claimed that a £36 million bid could prompt Sevilla manager, Julen Lopetegui to let the Frenchman leave the club this summer. United would only delve into the market for a striker if Lukaku did leave the club this summer. So far, Inter Milan hold an interest in the player but seem to want to dictate the fee they pay United, baulking at the price United have set.

Ben Yedder has spent the last three seasons playing for Sevilla, making a total of 136 appearances in all competitions, scoring 70 goals, which is around one goal every two matches. Whilst he might not be the first choice striker at United, with Marcus Rashford taking that role off Lukaku and the chances of Anthony Martial playing as a central striker, not to mention the development of Mason Greenwood.

Last season alone, the 28-year-old made a total of 54 appearances, playing in La Liga, the Supercopa, the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Europa League, including the qualification stages. He scored a total of 30 goals in all competitions, 18 of those in La Liga alone. A further 11 goals were assisted, showing that he is not a selfish striker and will tee up goals when it matters. In terms of ability to find the back fo the net, you can see why United, PSG and Barcelona are interested in the player.

Ben Yedder can play as the main striker, or one of two strikers playing in the central positions, also as the second striker, in the hole like Wayne Rooney was favoured to play in all them years ago. He cannot be utilised on the wings so he would not be a utility player – just one with a sole purpose – scoring and assisting goals. He could have the influence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic or even Robin van Persie.

The 28-year-old was a handful against United in the UEFA Champions League when they lost 2-1 at Old Trafford, scoring twoce in four minutes (74′ and 78′) which saw United exit the competition in the round of 16 stage. The first leg, in Seville, was a 0-0 draw and it was one of the worst results at the club under Jose Mourinho at the time. United might not have been able to win the Champions League that season but they should have had more fight against Sevilla.
