Manchester United could sign Bruno Fernandes ‘within a week’ – reports

Portuguese newspaper, A Bola has been reporting rumours about Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes for a while now with both Manchester United and Manchester City hot on the heels of the Portuguese player. Sport Witness have once again translated the reports. It is suggested that United has now become the front runners for the player.

The 24-year-old has seen Premier League champions, City, interested in signing him this summer, also with United who are looking to strengthening in the midfield this summer which will be the first of a few steps into rebuilding the club, which has needed to happen for six years now and has not been overseen properly, or to a sufficient plan.

A Bola has stated that City has made an offer for the player with reports materialising over the past few weeks that a €55 million deal could have seen the player arrive at the Etihad this summer, which included players as part of the deal. However, over the past few days, it now seems that the player could be heading to Old Trafford.

United has not yet presented a formal offer for Fernandes although reports say they are planning a ‘strong proposal’ which could see the Lisbon club let their prized asset leave the club this summer. It is also suggested that United could pay between €70-€80 million for Fernandes.

Fernandes is currently preparing for Portugal’s UEFA Nations League semi-final against Switzerland next week. However, as reports claim a deal could be done in as little as a week, it is suggested that Portugal’s national team could allow the player to leave the training camp to head to Manchester to sort out the formalities of the deal.

Some say this cannot happen because the transfer window is not actually open for foreign players to sign for English clubs. That window will open on the 11 June. However, it would not be a breach of those rules to sort out a prospective transfer, get everything in agreement including the signing of a contract, which would surely be dated from the 1 July anyway. The transfer would then be ratified after the window actually opened.

Some supposed supporters of the club on Twitter want Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to get business done early, in fact, some demand that. Yet when reports suggest that might actually happen, they play it down and state ‘the transfer window is not even open yet’, as if that means anything. Lots of clubs actually sort out deals long before any transfer window has been opened. It is not against the law to do this, as long as both clubs are involved in negotiations. Logic seems to have gone out of the window for many football fans.

These reports may not actually be true. I am sure that we will see movement soon as we enter into June in a matter of hours and Solskjaer has suggested that he wants his summer to be concluded before the club travels to Australia for their pre-season tour of the country, where they will then travel to Singapore, Shanghai, Oslo and Cardiff.
