Manchester United has Premier League rivals to beat if Douglas Costa is a target this summer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have rivals to beat if Juventus forward Douglas Costa is a target for the Old Trafford club this summer. Costa is a player that Sir Alex Ferguson was once linked to but never made a move to the Theatre of Dreams.

United’s Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly joined the race to sign the Brazilian, according to reports. Italian news source Tuttosport has also claimed that Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea all hold an interest in the 28-year-old.

Costa has predominantly been used by Juventus as a substitute this season, although when he has started matches, he has been playing as a right-winger, a position that United have been struggling to fill for the past five or six years. For me, that is the only positive here.

The Brazilian is a talented player but under Solskjaer, there seems to be a different feeling around the club with the Norwegian seemingly looking to find younger talented players which the club can turn into superstars, just like they did with Cristiano Ronaldo from the summer of 2003.

It is suggested that Costa could cost around £50 million and for a 28-year-old, who will be entering his 29th year a month into the new Premier League season, that sort of fee does not offer much value, despite the player being experienced in a position United has struggled with of late.

Juventus paid £34.1 million for Costa last summer, after a loan spell with the Italian giants after a spell at Bayern Munich, which seemingly failed. The Italian club will not be seeking to break even or make a loss from the sale of the player if he does leave the club this coming summer.

It was reported that United had a £54 million bid for Costa rejected in December, ahead of the January transfer window. Costa was linked to United whilst Jose Mourinho but after his sacking in December, it remains to be seen whether he is a player that Solskjaer has interest in.

This season has seen the player hit with a number of injuries, missing the first five matches of the season with an ankle injury and then missing a further nine matches with a hamstring problem. This suggests that he might not be the player United needs during the rebuilding process.

However, with Juventus guaranteed to be playing UEFA Champions League football next season, Costa will most likely opt to leave the Italian club for another club which will be playing in the competition, so those teams that fall short might be out of a chance to sign the Brazilian.

United has many talented players in the academy and signing a player in the peak of his career might be good for them, especially for their development as his experience could pay off, showing them how to adapt to first team football and make the big step up. This is also a positive.
