Manchester United line up PSG midfielder as Sir Jim Ratcliffe enters ‘shock transfer race’ for player – reports

The 23-year-old has been described as a revelation by the French media

Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign Manual Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. It has been reported that United minority stake holder Sir Jim Ratcliffe has entered a ‘shock transfer race‘ for the Uruguayan. United are keen to sign a midfielder this summer.

United are also on the hint for a central defender and a striker this summer. Ugarte, 23 would fit the profile for United being that it is under the age of 25, which is one of the things that Sir Jim Ratcliffe has set at the club to try and bring the glory days back to the Old Trafford club.

Sky Sports have claimed that Paris Saint-Germain are considering a bid for the 23-year-old, which at this time is complex as the player is currently representing Uruguay in the Copa America, having played on Monday evening with his country beating Panama 3-1.

It has also been reported that Juventus have made a play for the midfielder with PSG rejecting their approach as they do not want to sell the midfielder. Ugarte has been in Paris for one season having made the switch from Sporting Lisbon in a £50 million deal last summer.

The midfielder played 37 times for PSG last season, scoring no goals but assisting three. The French media classed him as a ‘revelation’ which has resulted in all this attention for the player. United want to sign players under the age of 25, who are not of the Galactico profile which makes sense.

United need to be doing what many other clubs have been doing over the past decade – seeking young players with a talent for football, signing them and nurturing them – creating star players rather than paying for Galacticos who drain money but have given very little.

This approach for the right kind of players by Ratcliffe and United seems to be very sensible which, over the summer, will see many more players linked – some of whom will not fit the profile at all and be easily debunked. United will have to get their transfer business right though.

During his career, Ugarte has played for Fénix, Famalicão, Sporting Lisbon and now Paris Saint-Germain. The 23-year-old has now made 200 appearances at club level, scoring four goals and assisting a further nine. He is predominantly a defensive midfielder but can play central midfield.

I support Manchester United, the greatest English football team to have ever existed. Bruno Fernandes is the latest in a long line of players with great ability to play for the club. I idolised Bryan Robson, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, and Eric Cantona growing up.
