Manchester United reportedly ‘express intention to accelerate’ Bruno Fernandes transfer; Player returns to Lisbon this week

Manchester United’s transfer plans seem to be coming together at last. In just over a fortnight, Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been confirmed as summer signings for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. Granted, there is still much to do in order to turn this underachieving squad into one capable of putting up a fight to win matches this coming season.

Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been a player who has been linked with the Old Trafford club since at least February with the links hotting up from May onwards. Fernandes has been chased by Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Liverpool and United this summer with claims that three of the English clubs have ruled themselves out.

The media has suggested that United are only capable of signing one player at a time, which looking at the facts; signing James and Wan-Bissaka – seems to be true, however, nobody knows what is going on behind the scenes. James lost his father which delayed things and Wan-Bissaka was representing England U21s, so things happened the way they did in respect to both of those.

Fernandes represented Portugal in the UEFA Nations League so his holiday period overlapped players who did not have any involvement in international duty this summer and he’s still on holiday in Dubai with reports he’s due to meet with his Sporting teammates this coming week. Some of United’s players are back in pre-season training this week also.

United might well have done a lot of the leg work towards the end of the season, getting deals to a stage where they can be finalised at a later date. Nobody knows they have not done this as each target seems to have different circumstances with their holiday, international football etc. This should be considered, along with the fact there is no real rush.

It would be great to see all United’s signings done before the 1 July each summer but that ideal world we all want is nothing but a wish. Things happen in life which delays things. Patience is required as fans do not call the shots with clubs – not in terms of transfers etc. Fernandes could well be the third signing this summer, in terms of the fact other interested clubs have seemingly pulled the plug on a possible deal.

On Saturday, according to Sport Witness, there was nothing in the media in Portugal relating to the Fernandes transfer saga. However, on Sunday, Record made a small claim stating that United has not ‘expressed their intention to accelerate’ the transfer of Fernandes now that the Wan-Bissaka deal has been completed and announced.

Of course, there were claims in the Portuguese media towards the end of this week suggesting that the move could be confirmed this weekend or early next week. The latter seems to be more likely now with the claims in the Record suggesting that there could be news on the Portuguese midfielder’s departure this coming week.

United will be leaving for Australia in a weeks time so they will need to get this transfer completed by then, ideally. The Mirror has reported that Liverpool has ruled themselves out of the race to sign Fernandes as there was some speculation, albeit on Twitter, that he was heading to Liverpool during the past week, as the player boarded a flight – to Dubai!

Obviously, nothing is certain in the transfer market but the reports have always suggested that United were the frontrunners for Fernandes. Manchester City was said to be signing him at one point which prompted updates from City-aligned journalists suggesting otherwise. It seems positive for United at this moment in time. I guess we will soon see.
