Manchester United schedule meeting with representatives of Bruno Fernandes ahead of prospective transfer

Manchester United has reportedly made a first move to sign Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon ahead of what will be seen as a busy summer transfer window for the Old Trafford club. The reports materialised in Portuguese newspaper A Bola on Sunday. It was suggested in the report that United would like to do business without any competition for the player with the club apparently scheduling a meeting this week to discuss the prospective transfer of the 24-year-old midfielder.

It was said that Sporting would like to keep Fernandes for another season and their desire for this to happen would relate to the €100 million release clause for the player. However, A Bola has suggested that a fee in the region of €60-70 million could be enough to prise the player from the Portuguese club. There are many Premier League clubs that are credited with an interest in Fernandes, including Chelsea and Liverpool, plus interest from other European clubs, including AC Milan.

United, at least so far, are the only club to come forward actually discussing the prospective transfer, which could be a good sign, although other clubs could come forward if they really want to sign the 24-year-old in the summer. Over the past few months, Chelsea, Liverpool and even Everton were all linked to Fernandes and Sport Witness, who have covered this report, covered all of those links. They suggest, that as this appeared on the front page of A Bola that they might know something about a possible deal.

Fernandes has played 34 times for Sporting this season, playing in the Liga NOS, UEFA Europa League, the Taça de Portugal and the Carlsberg Cup. The 24-year-old has scored 22 goals this season, also assisting a further 11 goals. Fernandes is a fans’ favourite at Sporting so it would take a big fee and some work to get any prospective transfer completed. Last summer, the likes of Rui Patricio, William Carvalho and Gelson Martins all departed the club but Fernandes decided to remain with the club, despite the turmoil.

Fernandes can play in a number of positions in the midfield, predominantly playing as a central midfielder or a central attacking midfielder. However, he has also played as a right midfielder, a left midfielder, on the left-wing, even as a defensive midfielder, although these are not the positions he thrives in. The 24-year-old has scored seven goals and six assists as a central midfielder, five goals and two assists as a central attacking midfielder, which I feel are his best positions.

This summer, it is expected that it will be another big summer for United, who not only have to bring in a new manager, which could well be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but Ed Woodward will need to bring in a director of football, along with new players to strengthen the club. If this does not happen, the new manager will not have been backed by the club and the past six years of poor management, poor football and a lack of competing will happen again.

United sold Marouane Fellaini during the January transfer window are not currently blessed with a lot in the midfield rankings whilst Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera are on the sidelines through injury. Herrera is out of contract in the summer, although reports have suggested that United are talking to the player regarding a new contract with the club. There have been doubts raised about Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira, the latter being out of contract in the summer, so there will be places for new players.
