Marco Reus to replace Wayne Rooney this summer says ‘Don Balon’

Marco Reus plays for Borussia Dortmund and was once on of the most prolific players in Germany. Injuries are something Reus has suffered a lot of during his career with 39 separate injuries reported, which has seen him miss a lot of matches for his club with it also being a contributing factor for the players decline. Reus was once wanted by Barcelona and some of the top clubs around the world. Don’t get me wrong, Reus is still a class player, but the fact he has not played a complete season recently, always seeming to pick up some kind of injury along the way, would be a worry United do not need with injury prone players of their own at the club. This season, Reus returned from injury in November, making 23 appearances to date, scoring eleven goals and assisting in six more. Reus has had 53 shots on goal, 26 of those being on target, meaning just under half of his shots are on target.

What is being reported and by who?

The Sun have reported that United are looking at Reus in order to replace Wayne Rooney, which a number of weeks ago was Antoine Griezmann and James Rodriguez who were both reportedly going to replace the captain of Manchester United. The reports from the Sun come from Don Balon, which is as reliable as a chocolate fireguard. It is also stated that Atletico Madrid are keen on the German international, who has also been linked with many Premier League clubs over the past few summers. The Manchester Evening News have also reported the news, again citing Don Balon. The Daily Star report that Barcelona could help United land Reus this summer, stating that with Lionel Messi’s deeper role, there would not be a chance he would dislodge the player from the team, which is a strange thing to say considering his class for the Catalan club. Much of this report cites Don Balon, so it is clear that the ‘click bait’ news industry is back with a vengeance. The Daily Star also suggested that Barcelona and Liverpool have an interested in the player, presumably before Don Balon said what they did about Messi, also stating that Borussia Dortmund wants £67 million for the player, which is ludicrous considering the players injury record, only returning to action in November 2016.

What type of player is Marco Reus?

Marco Reus is a forward who can be found playing on the wing more often than not. A few years ago, he was one of the best players in Germany, but injury has caused his career to decline a little with him looking to get back to where he was before numerous injuries which at 27 years old may be a little late for him. Reus is a class player but saying he would replace Rooney at the club would be deemed as an insult. Right now, it is widespread belief that any player could replace Wayne Rooney at the club. Reus is a versatile player for Borussia Dortmund, playing in an attacking midfielder role, most of the time on the wing, but he can play as a striker also, which may be why it has been reported the player could replace Rooney, perhaps as a like for like, but this is not Reus’ favoured position. The German international is known for his speed also, along with his technique, which is something United may be interested in, but there will be a long list containing other names above that of Reus, in my opinion at least.

Likelihood of the transfer?

The reports linking the player to Manchester United come from Don Balon, who have adopted a scattergun approach to transfers, one of them will stick at some point and they will be able to say they were right. As this seems to be the only source reporting the news, it is unlikely that United are even interested in Reus. With all due respect to the player, his injury record is not the best, suffering 39 injuries during his career, which with the fact Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have been long-term injury prone players, adding another will not be the best thing to do. Based on the above, I just do not see enough to suggest these reports are anything other than ‘click-bait journalism’.
