Marouane Fellaini reportedly in talks with Chinese Super League about a move away from Manchester

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini is reportedly in talks with the Chinese Super League about a move from the Old Trafford club. Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande have been rumoured to be interested in the Belgian midfielder in recent weeks. Fellaini is currently in Belgium recovering from a calf injury which will see him miss a further three weeks of action. The transfer window in China will close on the 28th February 2019, so there is time to allow the player to recover from his injury.

Fellaini was signed by United more than five and a half years ago, signing on deadline day in the summer of 2013 for a fee which cost £4 million more than it would have earlier that summer. The Belgian has divided opinion about his time at the club, seemingly live Marmite – you either love him or you hate him. Last summer, Fellaini was out of contract and many thought he would leave the club, however, United re-signed him, which set a dangerous precedent at the Old Trafford club.

The Daily Mail reports that a Chinese delegation to United’s Carrington training ground and that Fellaini was due to arrive at some point on Tuesday to talk about a possible departure from the club. It has been suggested that this would be a multi-million-pound move from United to the unnamed Chinese club, whether that means a transfer fee or the prospective wage for the player, who knows. It is probably the latter though.

Under the management of Jose Mourinho, Fellaini was a favourite and played a lot of football in the two and a half years the Portuguese manager was at the club. Since he was sacked though, Fellaini has played just 31 minutes of football under caretaker manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. It has been suggested that Fellaini’s game time at United will be at risk as Solskjaer prefers to utilise quicker players in his squad with Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic preferred to play with Paul Pogba.

It was reported in the past few weeks that Scott McTominay could head out on loan for the second half of the season but reports now suggest that Solskjaer put a hold on that happening to maintain cover if Fellaini was to be sold before the closure of the winter transfer window, which for European clubs will end on Thursday evening. However, with the Chinese window remaining open for another month, there is time for the departure to happen.

At United, Fellaini has played 177 times, 106 times as a starting player, playing a total of 10,446 minutes in all competitions. The Belgian has scored 22 goals for his club, seven in the 2014/15 season, four in each of the 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons, scoring two in the current season. He has been yellow carded 30 times, seeing red three times. With the Belgian on the pitch, United have won 54.2% of matches. However, there have been some shocking displays from the Belgian.

If Fellaini did leave the club this winter, which many will be hoping for, it would leave United with Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba, Fred, Andreas Pereira and Scott McTominay as the more experienced central defender at the club. I think Solskjaer and his coaching team will look at the players they have and see that things will be just fine if the Belgian does leave the club, however, that should have been something that happened last summer, rather than now. Hopefully United get a good fee from China.
