Mourinho in the hunt for a fourth Manchester United summer signing

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is still looking to bring in a fourth new signing this summer in his bid to return his club back to the dominant, ruthless title winners they were under the watchful eye of Sir Alex Ferguson. Before the end of last season, Mourinho gave a list of players to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward which has so far confirmed the additions of Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku, and Nemanja Matic. Mourinho was looking for a defender, a striker, and a defensive midfielder and still wants a winger.

Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic still remains in the headlines as being linked to the Old Trafford club despite United and Inter failing to agree on a deal which would see the Croatian winger ply his trade at the Theatre of Dreams this coming season. Mourinho has applied pressure on Woodward a few times already this summer, with the Portuguese manager suggesting he wanted a defensive midfielder whilst on the pre-season tour of the United States of America and Matic arriving at the Old Trafford club on Monday as a £35 million signing from Chelsea.

After the 2-1 victory over Sampdoria at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Wednesday evening, Mourinho was asked about the signings, to which he had been asked throughout the pre-season tour stating he would be happy with four players this summer, the same number of players he brought to the club in his debut summer transfer window. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata scored the goals. either side of Sampdoria’s on Wednesday with the manager again reiterating he desire for a fourth new signing this summer, saying:

“Everybody’s in the plan. The plan is to have a good squad, not to have a good team, it’s to have a good squad with options and we have important players injured for a long time, they are going to be back just by the end of the year, so our squad is not so big and we need options, we need different players.

“Lukaku, Martial and Rashford are all different players and we need everybody and it’s going to be good, it’s going to be fun to choose the team for every match, according to the plan, to the opponent, to our gameplan.

“So the squad is good and, as I told a few months ago, I was hoping for four players to improve the squad and the club did a fantastic job, absolutely fantastic, by getting three of them, which is difficult in the crazy market where we are now.

“To get three out of four, I thank the club for that. I would be happier if they gave me four of four but they did a great effort for me.”

After the 1-0 defeat to Barcelona in Landover, Maryland last week, in which Neymar Jr scored the winning goal, around a week after making his £198 million move to Paris Saint-Germain, Mourinho stated that he was seeking a defensive midfielder and an attacking midfielder to play on the wing. Matic arrived on Monday, so that just leave the attacking player, or if you will, a winger, to solve Mourinho’s problems.

Anthony Martial has been touted as a player Inter Milan would like, albeit on loan, if the Old Trafford outfit signed Perisic, but that is not something that Mourinho, United or even any of United’s supporters would want as by strengthening the side, it would be weakened at the same time with Martial leaving the club for the season, which could see him lose faith with United and demand a move at the end of the season, which would see United losing a lot of money.

United face Real Madrid to contest the UEFA Super Cup in Skopje, Macedonia on Tuesday, of which Mourinho would love to have that fourth signing secured, but most importantly for the opening Premier League match of the season with United going head-to-head with West Ham United, who purchased Javier Hernandez in the summer, seemingly where he will lock horns with his former club for the first time.
