Nemanja Matic deal held up over bonus clauses – reports

The deal which would see Manchester United make their third signing of the summer has been held up according to The Sun. Nemanja Matic has been linked to Jose Mourinho’s United for the entire summer with moves nearing completion, links to other teams and reports of a £50 million deal to be concluded as a ‘favour’, Now the deal has seemingly been held up again because of a ‘squabble’ over the bonus clauses which would be included in the deal. It has been reported that Matic, who skipped the club’s pre-season tour of China and Singapore, training on his own at the club’s training ground has already agreed personal terms with the Old Trafford outfit.

The deal, however, will not be concluded until both teams agree a bonus structure which will mean extra payments to the selling club should certain things be achieved during the player’s time at the Theatre of Dreams. The Premier League champions seem to be asking for a structure based on United’s results and the number of matches played by the Serbian international, which is nothing strange in a transfer such as this one. Mourinho is said to be a big fan of Matic, presumably because of his performances when Chelsea won the Premier League under his watch, just over six months before the Portuguese manager’s sacking, which then saw him linked to United for a further six months or so, before actually becoming the clubs third manager post-Sir Alex Ferguson.

Mourinho has already confirmed that he is still seeking two more players this summer; a defensive minded midfielder and an attacking midfielder dominant on the wing. Matic could be the holding midfielder the club needs to strengthen the side ahead of the new season, cutting the reliance of Michael Carrick, who turned 36 over the last few days. United are said to be seeking closure of this deal in the coming week, which is something we have all heard before, that week came and left, then we headed into another week, the record was reset and that week came and went. There are 33 days of the transfer window remaining, so Mourinho and United have time to make signings, but presumably, the club and manager want them before the start of the new season.

United had a bid of £35 million turned down for Matic earlier in the summer, which is fair enough. United do not want to offer a large amount in their first attempt to sign the player and Chelsea will not want to accept an amount which clearly undercuts their valuation, so the middle ground will need to be found. Last week it was reported £50 million would be the selling price, so it would be up to United to find an acceptable figure between their initial offer and that figure, probably closer to the latter to seal the deal with add-ons making the difference, which will only be paid if certain things are achieved by the player at his new club.

The Sun has reported that both Chelsea owner Roma Abramovich and manager Antonio Conte has signed off the deal to sell Matic to United, the Serbian following the path Juan Mata took in January 2014, which will strengthen United, weaken Chelsea, who had strengthened themselves with AS Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, who will not be fit to start the season in a few weeks time. Matic played 30 Premier League matches for Chelsea last season with the club easily taking the Premier League title away from Leicester City, which was inevitable. Perhaps this season Manchester United could follow that same patch, taking the title from London and bringing it back to Manchester for the 14th time in the history of the Premier League.
