Nicky Butt feels Nemanja Matic is a perfect fit for Manchester United

Manchester United Academy Director and Class of 92 graduate Nicky Butt feels that Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic would be the perfect fit at the Old Trafford club. Matic has been linked with a move to reunite with Jose Mourinho this summer after previously being linked to the club since the arrival of the Portuguese manager. Butt feels that Matic would be the best option because he is happy to do what he calls the dirty work for his teammates, sitting in front of the back-four, allowing the more attacking minded players to get forward and do the business for the club, which for Paul Pogba would be great as that seems to be what he needs to succeed at the club.

Matic is an experienced Premier League player and during the season Mourinho last won the Premier League title with the club, the 2014/15 season, the Serbian midfielder has what is considered as the best season in his career making 49 appearances for the Premier League champions, scoring three goals, earning himself ten bookings and a red card, but was considered to be success for the way he did his job in Chelsea’s domination to win back the Premier League crown after it’s four-year stay in Manchester with both United and City winning the title twice in that time. Butt, speaking to Unibet, spoke about Matic, the work he does and the fact the best players in the team are not always the match winners, saying:

“He’s the type of player who’d be happy to sit in front of back four, a team player who doesn’t get the same attention of a goalscorer. He does the work that is appreciated by his teammates. The best players in a team are not always the match winners, but those who can play in a team.”

Chelsea are the current Premier League champions again after wrestling the crown from Leicester City, well not actually wrestling, but you know what I mean. Matic made 40 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions last season, scoring twice and having his name in the book six times. It was not a successful season for the player though with him being overlooked for much of the season by new manager Antonio Conte with reinforcements seemingly on their way to the Stamford Bridge club this summer, possibly in the form of Tiemoue Bakayoko of AS Monaco. Matic has been linked to United for a number of weeks now with a move tipped which would see him arrive at the Old Trafford club, but nothing has been confirmed as yet.

United need to wait and see what Chelsea do in the transfer market, obviously waiting to pounce for their midfield target once they are able to. Mourinho is reportedly looking to get his signings done before the team head to Los Angeles on Sunday ahead of their pre-season tour which will commence against LA Galaxy on Saturday 15th July 2017, the early hours of the following day in the United Kingdom. It looks unlikely at this moment in time that Mourinho will have the players he needs ready to board that plane in Manchester on Sunday, but stranger things have happened. United did manage to sign both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin in the summer of 2015, just hours before boarding their flight to the United States of America, which could happen again, if the reports are true, of course.
