Ratings: Paul Pogba MOTM in Cherries victory as Smalling and Lukaku win the game for Manchester United

Manchester United beat Bournemouth 2-0 in the Premier League at the Vitality Stadium on Wednesday evening. Chris Smalling, scoring his third goal in 2018, his fourth of the season struck in the 28th minute with substitute Romelu Lukaku scoring the second goal of the game in the 70th minute. It was not the best United performance, but it will do.

It was a much better performance by United, with seven changes from the defeat to West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Sunday. Two decent goals were scored with Smalling scoring more than Alvero Morata in 2018 so far and Lukaku scoring his 27th goal of the season, beating last seasons tally for Everton. 201 goals have now been scored in the Jose Mourinho era.

The media will now be speculating who will be dropped ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final with Tottenham Hotspur based on the comments Mourinho gave ahead of this match. They have suggested that both Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba will be sold in the summer, something which may start to die a death, I doubt it too.

Manchester United

1 David De Gea

The Spanish number one was solid again, keeping his 17th clean sheet of the season for United, his 21st in total - the most he's had in a season at the club.

Matteo Darmian

It was not the best performance for the Italy international who started his first match in months. Seemed to pass backwards and be out of position a lot of the time. Did defend with a great header, giving away a corner though.

4 Phil Jones

The injury-prone defender was back to his best today, giving Smalling a run for his money with a performance close to his best.

Chris Smalling

Scored the 200th goal in the Mourinho era, making it a hat-trick of goals in the last three Premier League away matches. Was defensively astute as the Englishman is starting to find some form and possibly a furutre at the club.

23 Luke Shaw

Looked the part in places. Got forward the caused some mayhem, even tracked back when he lost the ball. Creative in attack and astute in his defending most of the time. Could have gave away a penalty but nothing was given.

21 Ander Herrera

The Spaniard did a lot of work in place of Darmian, who was out of position a few times, which showed his hunger to keep his place in the team. Not a lot of creation in the game but he involved himself in plenty of tackling.

27 Marouane Fellaini

The Belgian midfielder worked hard and stamped his authority on the game, Never going to he an Old Trafford hero, but was one of the reasons United dominated and won against Bournemouth.

6 Paul Pogba

MOTM for me. Pogba was told to keep things simple ahead of the game and he did just that. Not really the creative drive going forward but he had his moments. Put in a great assist for Lukaku's 27th goal of the season.

14 Jesse Lingard

Had another good game for United. It seems he could be the player Mourinho builds his team around. Set up Smalling's opener with his briliance in reading the game, pouncing on the ball and slotting it over to Smalling to find the back of the net. Made some great linkup play throughout the game.

10 Marcus Rashford

Led the line before Lukaku came on tonight. He was not given much service, as is the case when Lukaku plays, but he got involved and seemed to show his ability, which may have impressed the manager ahread of Saturday's FA Cup semi-final.

9 Anthony Martial

The Frenchman could not be faulted for his performance against Bournemouth. He was a predator on the left flank, effectively running the show. On his day, he is unplayable, but inconsistency rings true with him.

Romelu Lukaku

Replaced Lingard 63'. Scored his 27th goal of the season, beating last seasons tally for Everton with a fine finish. Held up play well andplayed a part in the victory.

31 Nemanja Matic

Replaced Herrera 72'. Came on late in the game to add some freshness to the midfield. Did his job well although the job was done before he came on.

17 Daley Blind

Replaced Pogba 80'. Came on the the final ten minutes after recovering from injury. Hsia nightmare with a miss kick but it caused no problems as he was on the attack. Good to see him back.
