Romelu Lukaku in amazing form says Jose Mourinho as striker scores twice in Moscow

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has been praised by manager Jose Mourinho after scoring his ninth and tenth goal of the season against CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening. Lukaku has been in prolific form this season, playing just nine matches for his new club following his £75 million transfer from Everton during the summer. It is likely that the Belgian striker will cost United £90 million in the end though, which is not a problem for a club considered the richest in football right now.

Lukaku opened the scoring in the fourth minute of the match, scoring his second in the 27th minute, having chances to complete his hat-trick, only scoring five in his professional career, four in club football, one for his country. Lukaku was assisted by Anthony Martial for both of his goals, the Frenchman scoring a penalty in between the two goals, the player also having a hand in United’s fourth of the night, Henrikh Mkhitaryan pouncing on the rebound from Martial’s shot, beating Igor Akinfeev for the fourth time in the match. Mourinho, reported by Sky Sports, said:

“It is a great achievement but it is only possible with a good team.

“Without a good team it is not possible and the team is playing well. They are amazing numbers for Romelu. He is humble and wants to learn and improve all the time.

“I think ambition is there and I trust he can keep performing for us.”

During the match in Moscow, Lukaku played 90 minutes, having four shots on target, scoring twice, meaning that 100% of his shots were on target, which when you think about what Chelsea supporters said about his first touch, makes you wonder if they said that whilst wiping the tears away from their faces. Lukaku is not a perfect striker yet, but at only 24, he still has a lot to learn. This is the first time he has played in the UEFA Champions League, and to think he has scored three goals in the two matches he has played, it makes you wonder what he is capable of.

This Saturday, United face Crystal Palace at Old Trafford in the Premier League, a team who sit at the bottom of the league table, winless in their six league matches this season, conceding 13 goals, yet to reply. Lukaku, in good form at this stage of the season, will thrive against a team such as Palace. In all matches played this season, including internationals, Lukaku has scored 14 goals, only failing to score against Leicester City in United 2-0 victory on the 26th August 2017.

Lukaku has scored in every match he has played since starting for Belgium in the 9-0 victory over Gibraltar on the 31st August, missing one match, the 4-1 victory over Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup, named as a substitute, no need for Jose Mourinho to get him involved in the match. Lukaku will be looking to continue his blinding form in the Premier League this weekend before the international break commences again with Belgium, wh have already qualified for next summer’s FIFA World Cup, facing Bosnia and Herzegovina and Cyprus.
