Sergej Milinkovic-Savic will decide his future after the FIFA World Cup this summer

Manchester United transfer target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has confirmed that he will sit down and decide his future after the FIFA World Cup in Russia this summer. Serbia will play their first match in the tournament in a week’s time, taking on Costa Rica, also playing Switzerland and Brazil in the group stages. Jose Mourinho recently stated that he hoped Serbia did not make the knockout stages of the tournament as he hopes Nemanja Matic will get some rest this summer. It makes me wonder if it also means something else.

United have been linked to Milinkovic-Savic for what seems like months now. At 23, he has reached the stage where his career needs to grow and for that to be done, a new challenge could help that, at a new club, in a new league, in a different country. It seems increasingly likely that United will need to bring in a second central midfielder this summer with Marouane Fellaini’s contract expiring at the end of the month. United have seemingly replaced Michael Carrick with Fred prospectively joining the club, although United have not confirmed the player has completed his move.

During the past season with Lazio, Milinkovic-Savic emerged as a target for a number of Europe’s biggest clubs, which could form a transfer battle if the player decides that he wants to move on from the club, who were beaten on the final day of the season by Inter Milan and missed out on a UEFA Champions League place. Real Madrid and United are two of the bigger clubs linked to the 23-year-old Serbian this summer with both seemingly able to pay a huge transfer fee for the player if he does decide to leave Italy.

Speaking about his future recently, Milinkovic-Savic, who played alongside Matic in midfield for Serbia in their World Cup warm-up match against Bolivia, in which they won 5-1 on Saturday, spoke about his concentration for the upcoming tournament in Russia, the fact that he reads something in the world media about him every day, linking him with another club or with a club he has previously been linked to. But speaking about his future, Milinkovic-Savic said:

“I am trying to remain concentrated, even though every day I read something new about me. Obviously, I feel pressure on me and know that I’ll have to live with this situation throughout the World Cup. It’s the same pressure when I play for Lazio, so I am accustomed to it. I will decide where to continue my career after the World Cup. There’s a very good atmosphere among the squad and it feels like I’ve been here for years. I can’t wait to start the tournament.”

Arsenal emerged as a contender to sign the 23-year-old this summer, which could be more of nothing than something as new manager Unai Emery only has around £50 million to spend on transfers, according to reports, which would see his side left out of the running to sign the midfielder, who would probably cost more than double that figure, especially if Lazio get their own way. Arsenal can only offer the player UEFA Europa League football, whilst both United and Real Madrid will be playing in the UEFA Champions League, a competition Arsenal has failed to reach twice in a row.

Milinkovic-Savic also spoke of his connection with United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who the player has always idolised and will play alongside in the World Cup this summer. The 23-year-old has been likened to former Real Madrid player and manager Zinedine Zidane, with Milinkovic-Savic himself suggesting that he is more of a Yaya Toure type player. The Serbian, confirming this, said:

“That comparison can only flatter me. However, I see myself more as a Yaya Toure. As for idols, I can say I have always watched and looked up to Nemanja Matic as well.”

Many United supporters would like to see Milinkovic-Savic sign for the Old Trafford club this summer. He is a midfielder that will achieve a lot for both club and country during his career. He is a midfielder that many teams would love to have in their team but when it comes to United, I don’t think that both Milinkovic-Savic and Paul Pogba could coexist and the fact that both players would want to play each and every match during the season, neither favouring a role on the bench.

It has been reported that United would not be selling Pogba this summer, despite the rumours that have emerged about his future at the Old Trafford club and the fact he was offered, by agent Mino Raiola, to Manchester City, and others during the winter. Pogba has not had the best of seasons since his return to United, but the World Cup will be an opportunity for him to find some form ahead of the new season. Pogba started last season well but suffered an injury, of which he struggled to find form after his return to fitness.

If United are interested in Milinkovic-Savic this summer, it will be another big transfer fee paid out on a player who looks like he will have a great career ahead of him but one who on every mistake will be mocked by rival supporters and journalists. If he does well, it will be nothing to do with United, well that is what will be written and said, and because he was a talent brought into the club. Some will moan about the fact the Academy players emerging will have been ignored again, despite the fact Pep Guardiola has ignored youth largely in his time at City.

Hated, adored, never ignored.
