Manchester United linked to Brazilian attacker in €40m deal; other clubs interested, is it a ploy?

Manchester United undoubtedly have a massive transfer window ahead of them. A window that should be used to clear out some of the deadwood at the club and bring in fresh players, fresh ideas and a fresh way of moving the club forwards. On Saturday evening, after United lost the Emirates FA Cup final in devastating fashion, with Phil Jones not only starting the match but giving away a penalty with resulted in the only goal of the game, the Old Trafford club was once again linked to Anderson Talisca.

Talisca is a Brazilian winger from Benfica but has spent the last two seasons on loan at Besiktas. He was linked to United last summer but nothing happened regarding that as the Turkish club held all the cards, already agreeing on his two-year loan spell the summer before. No move materialised. However, Besiktas had a €21 million clause to buy Talisca this summer, something which is not expected to happen for whatever reason. Besiktas boss Senol Gunes has already confirmed the player will leave the Turkish club this season, saying:

“Talisca was already gone at the winter break. I’m sorry that he won’t be with us any longer. I wish he could stay for his sake and ours. He already had a deal in place. He might be rivals with Cenk Tosun.”

The Brazilian has been linked to Liverpool and Premier League newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers recently. Besiktas boss Gunes had an exchange of words with journalists about the 24-year-old in which he was asked if the player would be heading to Roma. Sport Witness, who translated the video, reports him responding as; “I can’t tell. But he could be a rival to Cenk Tosun.” It was then asked by the journalist whether it was Wolverhampton Wanderers with Gunes responding; “Look higher.”

A Turkish journalist, who specifically covers Besiktas, called Firat Gunayer has claimed that Talisca has agreed to join Manchester United this summer. However, there is no deal in place with Benfica, the owners of the player but they want to achieve the best price they can get for the Brazilian, from anyone. It seems they do not care where he goes, just how much they get for him. That is only to be expected. Jose Mourinho is a fan of the player, in 2014, if Chelsea could obtain a work permit for Talisca, he would have signed him, so said the insinuation. In 2015, Mourinho said:

“So I repeat what I said (that he was keen on him and he’d have been in England if not for a work permit). And that does not mean we want the player for something, and it doesn’t mean that we don’t him for anything.

“It’s a logical thing: where is a player in the world today who is detected only by one club? Only if he is hidden in a tomb and found by someone on safari in Africa. Within the known markets, there is no player that is detected by a single club.

“So I think it’s very good that Jorge has a great picture of himself and that he’s a person very proud of his path and his work, I think all this absolutely normal, but do not mess with my job which I also take very seriously.”

One thing that comes to my mind is the fact Manchester United have been linked with players from Benfica before, never for them to actually join the Old Trafford club. These sagas seem to come back time and time again, just with different players now. Could a club like Benfica use United’s name to attract interest on the sale of a player? Of course they could, and seemingly they have, especially with Nicolás Gaitán, who eventually left for Atletico Madrid and is now playing in China for Dalian Yifang.

It was reported by talkSPORT back in March that United were interested in Talisca, also confirming the interest Mourinho had in the player when he was the Chelsea manager. The report stated that United were ‘closing in’ on the Brazilian in a £35 million deal, which is currently suggested to be €40 million, around the same figure, given the exchange rate currently. The report also stated that Wolves, recently winning promotion to the Premier League, were also interested in the player.

This season, Talisca has played 47 times for Besiktas, only seven of the appearances were from the bench. He has played in the Turkish Super Lig, the Turkish Cup, and the UEFA Champions League, scoring a total of 20 goals, also assisting seven times. The Brazilian predominantly played as a central attacking midfielder, but also as a right forward, a position United really need to strengthen this summer. Whether he is the right player to fill that void remains to be seen though.

Talisca has many strengths; finishing, long shots, direct free-kicks, and holding on to the ball. He also has many weaknesses; passing, defensive contribution, and tackling. His passing for the season stood at 80%, which is not that bad for a player who holds passing as a weakness. The 24-year-old’s style of play includes his love to play long balls, his ability to dribble, however, he does get fouled often and does not dive into tackles. Mourinho had an interest in the player, that continued the rumours, it remains to be seen if there is anything to see here.

Manchester United linked with £35.5 million move for Anderson Talisca, again!

Manchester United are reportedly ready to make a £35.5 million move for Benfica star Anderson Talisca. The Brazilian was linked to United in the summer but a two-year loan with Turkish side Besiktas ended the speculation with quotes from the hierarchy at the club. The move, being touted ahead of the summer transfer window has been speculated by Portuguese newspaper A Bola, which has been carried by The Sun in the United Kingdom.

This season in Turkey, Talisca has played a total of 36 times for his club, 30 starts, plus six substitute appearances, scoring 16 goals, offering three assists also. The Brazilian averages 3.4 shots, 1.1 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per game. On average in the matches WhoScored have been able to rate him for, his average rating is 7.18, which is not bad for a player of his age but he is playing in a league which is deemed less competitive compared to any of the top five leagues in Europe.

The 24-year-old is an attacking midfielder but is a central player. United really need a player to come in on the right side of the wing which is their weakest point in attack right now. Centrally, there are many players, including Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba and even Alexis Sanchez – although it is questionable whether both Pogba and Sanchez can play in the same team and formation together. Jose Mourinho has been long linked with Talisca though, so whether the interest is true or not, remains to be seen.

It is stated in the Independent today that Mourinho is seeking four major signings in the summer which could see as many as seven first team players leave the club. It is suggested that Mourinho will be looking for a central defensive partner for Eric Bailly and a controlling midfielder, which will cover half of the four key players the Portuguese manager is seeking to sign. Could Talisca be one of those four key players? I am not so sure. He is experienced in the Turkish league but a move to the Premier League will be a big leap for him.

Turkish newspaper Miliyet have reported that Wolverhampton Wanderers, seeking promotion to the Premier League this season, are in the running for Talisca. I would believe that link as it would be less of a gamble for the Brazilian. I know he would still be playing in the Premier League, but he will be under less pressure to succeed at Wolves then he would be under at Manchester United. Looking at recent players who have made the jump from a lesser league, Memphis Depay for instance, it just did not work at United for him.

The Sun report states that Jorge Mendes is Talisca’s agent too, which is not correct and possibly where the link to Wolves comes from, being that Mendes is connected to the Championship club in the form of an advisor. Transfermarkt states that Talisca’s agent is actually Carlos Leite, of Carlos Leite Sports which is not the company Mendes represents, Gestifute. Perhaps The Sun just need to get stories out with as little fact as possible, which now suggests that the link is nothing other than speculation.

Brazilian midfielder reiterates desire to work with Jose Mourinho

Benfica midfielder Anderson Talisca has once again reiterated his desire to work with Jose Mourinho also ending speculation with him comments which merely confirm that Manchester United have not come calling for the player. Over the past few weeks, there was speculation that United had been in advanced talks with the attacking player who was on loan with Turkish side Besiktas last season and has a deal to remain at the club for the upcoming season. Reports originally from Turkey seemed to get Besiktas to react by moaning about United, despite it being media speculation. Talisca will remain at Besiktas this coming season which was something which was suggested by the Turkish club.

The 23-year-old caught the eye last season by scoring 17 goals in 33 appearances in the Süper Lig and it has been reported that the player could make a permanent move from Benfica this summer with a fee of around £15 million, which seems a bit cheap for a talented player leaving the Portuguese club. Talisca has spoken to Futbolarena reiterating his desire to work with Mourinho which other players have said in the past, not actually working with him. The player did say that everyone would know if he had received an offer from Mourinho or United, which does not seem the be the case in this instance. The player said:

“I have a lot of respect for Jose Mourinho, he is an amazing manager and I have always said I would love to work with Mourinho. I do not want to get into this debate about an offer being made or not; let’s just say if I were to receive that kind of offer you would all know about it.”

Talisca joined Benfica for just £4.15 million in 2014 and has experience playing in both the Portuguese and Turkish leagues as well as playing in the UEFA Champions League with both clubs, which could be a deciding factor by any club who wants to acquire him this summer, if he does not actually play for Besiktas on loan into next season, which seems to be the agreement the Turkish giants feel they have at this present time. Besiktas official Metin Albayrak claimed last month that the club would need to be informed of any potential deal involving Talisca with that not happening so Albayrak suggested the speculation was merely that, something the player seems to have confirmed himself with his own comments. Speaking to Turkish-Football, Albayrak said:

“We have to be informed of any transfers, it cannot go ahead without us at the table, we have not been informed of a Man United deal.”

Manchester United still take other players to be linked to this summer, which is surprising as since early April names have been thrown out in the media suggesting a deal with the Old Trafford club was coming, which seeming is not. United are said to be moving on with a deal to sign Alvaro Morata, which seems to be taking a lot of time, despite the player still being on his honeymoon. Ivan Perisic is another player on the list of Mourinho’s targets, but Inter Milan want £48 million for the player, which for a 28-year-old seems a lot. Nemanja Matic is another player tipped to move north to Old Trafford, but Chelsea are understood to want to sign a replacement first with AS Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko tipped to arrive in the capital.

Manchester United must wait a year to sign Brazilian midfielder

Manchester United have reportedly been told that they must wait another year to sign Benfica’s Brazilian midfielder Anderson Talisca. Last week it was reported that United had ‘agreed personal terms‘ with the player, which may or may not be true. Turkish side Besiktas, who had agreed a deal, albeit last summer, to keep the talented Brazilian on loan for two years, had seemingly derailed United’s approach for the player, which may force United to wait or even find another target this summer. Talisca is a talented player and at just 23 he seems to be heading in the right direction for the big time, which he could reach with United, should they find an amicable solution for the transfer this summer or wait another year to sign him.

The Sun have reported that Talisca has a dream to play for Manchester United and manager Jose Mourinho is interested in the player, which may well be true with the Portuguese manager looking for reinforce his squad ahead of the new season, with creativity and a lack of goals hitting home during the past season, especially in the Premier League, with United ending up in sixth place for the very first time. Next season, Mourinho will be expected to launch a title challenge taking on the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal – all of the teams finishing ahead of United. Talisca could well be a player to cause a stir in United’s midfield, creating chances, assisting goals and of course scoring them.

Umut Guner, president of Besiktas’ transfer committee fired a shot in United’s direction after speculation surfaced last week that the Old Trafford club were interested in the player who spent last season on loan in the Süper Lig, scoring 17 goals in all competitions last season, 13 of which were scored in the Turkish league, of which he made 22 appearances last term. Guner, speaking to Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, said:

“There is no deal with Manchester United or anyone else in place. We agreed to a two-year deal with Benfica. The loan did have a clause that the option [for a second year] had to be activated, which we did. Talisca will stay at Besiktas on loan for another season. Reports claiming that he can be signed for his €25m (£22m) release clause are false, he has a deal with us. If a club wants to sign him now they will have to wait another 12 months.”

Talisca does not seem intent on missing out playing in the Premier League, possibly with Manchester United as he has previously spoken about playing for the Old Trafford club, which is where the talk of it being a dream move seems to come from. Speaking to Globoesporte, Talisca said:

“It’s a love that exists, I will not lie. It’s a dream, something all players want. But it [a move] does not depend on me alone. It depends on Benfica, my representatives, who are dealing with the situation. But soon, soon, they will have the news there. It’s something that all players want [a move to Manchester United]. I had a good season and, as I said, his [Mourinho’s] love is old and I like his work as well. I hope everything works out.”

Whether United manager to get a deal across the line this summer looks like a tough challenge with the Turkish club holding firm on the player they have on loan for another year. Saying that, If United really want the player and Mourinho wants to add him to his squad this summer, there is always a solution, which would probably involve some cogs being buttered somewhere, in the form of money of course. We shall see what develops in this transfer story, but at this moment in time, it looks like Manchester United will have to look elsewhere.

Anderson Talisca reportedly agrees personal terms with Manchester United

Anderson Talisca is one of many players linked to Manchester United this summer and one of many who could play to his potential. Jose Mourinho is obviously looking to changes things at the Old Trafford club this summer in a bid to find a squad which can compete in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League next season. United’s first season under the Portuguese manager earned them three trophies; the FA Community Shield, the EFL Cup, and the UEFA Europa League. Mourinho and his United team will be looking to build on that haul next season and he will need the players who offer the kind of thing he is looking for. Talisca spent last season on loan with Besiktas, scoring 17 goals in 33 appearances, which is a good return from the midfielder. The player is due to spend a second season at the Turkish club, but reports suggest United could swoop in for the player this summer.

What is being reported and by who?

The Sun have carried reports on Wednesday that United were in a position whereby they have ‘agreed personal terms’ with the player. The report also suggested that Besiktas have a €20 million clause written into the player’s loan deal which United are looking to match or even better in a bid to get such a deal across the line with the Brazilian midfielder moving to Old Trafford this summer. Turkish Football have reported that Besiktas official Metin Albayrak has stated he knows nothing about this potential deal and that he expects the player to play for the Turkish club next season, which suggests that either Benfica have not said anything to Besiktas, or there is nothing to this at all, other than speculation, of course. There are other reports out there talking about this prospective deal, using the same information as The Sun have provided, which seems to be from one particular source of information, Turkish newspaper AMK. The player does have a release clause in his contract which is reported to be £22 million.

What type of player is Anderson Talisca?

Anderson Talisca is a winner, the sort of thing Jose Mourinho likes in a player. During his career which started in Brazil, Talisca has won the Campeonato Baiano with Bahia. In 2014 the player signed for Benfica where he has won two Primeira Liga titles, two Taça da Liga trophies and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. The Brazilian moved to Besiktas last summer on a two-year loan spell, which could be cut short this summer, winning the Süper Lig. On the international stage for Brazil at U20 level, the player was part of the team which lifted the 2013 Toulon Tournament trophy. Talisca has played at U20 and currently plays at U23 level for his home country. Talisca has an eye for a goal and is said to have taken more shots on target in the league over any other player also having the best conversion rate in the Süper Lig last season. The Brazilian is a powerful attacking midfielder, something United could do with and is nicknamed the Snake, which could be deemed an insult by many but the Besiktas supporters have called him that based on the attacking prowess of the creature. Turkish Football says Talisca was built for the Premier League as he has raw power, speed, and an impressive work rate.

Likelihood of the transfer?

The only problem with Anderson Talisca is that he may find it hard to obtain a work permit in the United Kingdom based on the fact he has not played 30% of matches for Brazil over the last two years. This can be overcome with any buying club using the ‘exceptional talent’ avenue which is something United have done in the past when signing players who would be able to be classed in that particular area. The only other factor is that Besiktas have a contract with the player and Benfica, albeit only a loan contract, but he is due to spend the entirety of next season with the Turkish champions, which is something that would need to be ironed out if the reports of United agreeing personal terms with the player are in fact correct. The fact that he is a Benfica player, and the Portuguese club have been involved in speculation with certain players in the past *cough* Nicolas Gaitan *cough*, this could be the latest addition to that speculation. United should be interested in players like Talisca though, those who are seemingly under the radar in relation to the world class player being linked to the club. Not all word class players work out for the club, with other avenues needing to be taken. Could we see Talisca at Old Trafford next season? Who knows, but sooner or later, we should see something develop if this rumour has any legs at all.
