Manchester United linked with Jonny Evans; why oh why do the media make things up?

Manchester United are reportedly interested in re-signing another former Academy graduate this summer, but not for the massive £89 million paid to bring back Paul Pogba. West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans, who could see his team relegated from the Premier League this weekend, has been linked to the Old Trafford club. It will cost just £3 million to re-sign Evans this summer, three years after former manager Louis van Gaal sold the player for £6 million.

Evans, now 30, saw his stock in the Premier League rise after leaving United, which then led to Leicester City attempting to sign him, having a £10 million bid rejected. Manchester City, who were also looking to bolster their defence then made a move for Evans, seeing their £18 million bid rejected. Arsenal then made a move during the winter transfer window, offering £10 million plus fullback Mathieu Debuchy, which did not happen either.

United manager Jose Mourinho has previously suggested that some of the players sold by Van Gaal should still be at the club, which has led to suggestions that the Portuguese manager could attempt to re-sign former players. This summer will be another big transfer window for United and over the past few months it was reported that Mourinho would be looking to sign two fullbacks, a central defender, and at least one central midfielder, although it could be two with Michael Carrick retiring and Marouane Fellaini seemingly leaving.

Evans, at just £3 million, could be a bargain in the transfer window, looking at the cost only. I do not for one minute think he will be a player who would start for the club, he has experience but never seemed all that confident before he was sold – possibly one of the reasons he was sold. That is if the reports are true – most do not seem to become more than a link to attract attention. This season has not been the best for Evans, especially after the ‘stolen taxi’ in Barcelona, which discredited him, three teammates and his club.

Reports suggest that Mourinho feels Evans could be a good addition to his side as he has not been happy with his defence this season, despite them being second in the league for goals conceded, just one more than champions Manchester City. When Evans signed for the Baggies, who beat United at Old Trafford a few weeks ago, a clause was inserted that if they were ever relegated from the Premier League, he could leave for £3 million. That seems a certainty, even with three matches remaining this season.

Evans made 198 appearances for United, 179 starts and 19 substitute appearances, scoring seven goals for the club. He has also played 68 times for Northern Ireland during his career. This season, Evans has played a total of 2,542 minutes for West Brom, making a total of 30 appearances, only one of which came off the bench. The fact that the Baggies seem to be going down would make me wonder why Evans would be wanted by United. None of the West Brom players has earned the ability to remain in the Premier League after this season.

Evans has left United. United don’t really need him. The club has done well without Evans over the past three years, even if the defence has not performed as it should have at times. If a central defender is on the list for Mourinho this summer, re-signing Evans is not really the best option out there. He might be the cheapest but cheap does not always mean things will work out. Toby Alderweireld is a player who could be available, and even if he costs £40 million or more, he would still be a better option over Evans.
