Manchester United have not made an offer for Jorginho this summer, says representative Joao Santos

Manchester United have been linked with Napoli midfielder Jorginho this summer but there is no offer on the table from the Old Trafford club, according to the player’s representative Joao Santos. Jose Mourinho will need to replace Michael Carrick this season and along with Jorginho, Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred has been mooted as a possible replacement.

Reports had suggested that United was using Mourinho’s own agent, Jorge Mendes to try and secure a deal for the Brazil-born Italy international. Normally when agents speak about interest, it is either correct or it is a game to get a club to pay a bit more money, or even tempt them into talks to sign the player, which could result in more money being paid by the interested party.

It is suggested that it is, in fact, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City that is in pole position to sign Jorginho this summer, which could be right after the player seemed to suggest he would be more interested playing for City than United next season. Speaking to Radio Crc and reported by The Sun, Santos said:

“Jorginho has done very well with Napoli, he plays for the Italian national team, he is unique in his characteristics and for those reasons he’s probably being followed by many teams. At the moment though there are a lot of rumours flying about. The Napoli coach and players are being approached by first one team then another, but there’s nothing official.

“The last thing I read is that Manchester United made a proposal through Jose Mourinho’s representative [Jorge Mendes], but no-one called me. At the moment, given the two-year contract with Napoli, the last word is up to De Laurentiis [Napoli’s president].”

The 26-year-old has been linked to a number of Premier League club with both United and City that were seen as possibilities, with Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal all said to be interested in the player too. The Times reported that Jorginho could cost around £53 million this summer, a fee that many clubs may not be able to afford.

Jorginho’s representative has stated that no official offer has been made for the player but he has ruled out a deal with a Serie A rival, meaning if he leaves Napoli, it will be to a club away from Italy, which is understandable. Santos also spoke about everyone asking for information on Jorginho’s future, confirming that no offers have been made, saying:

“Everyone asks for information, but nobody has made any official offers so I can’t say which track is hotter. I’ve already been to all the English clubs because that’s my job, I get information. If he were to leave Napoli I can say that Jorginho wouldn’t play for any other [Serie A] team, even if he didn’t have any release clause.”

This season, Jorginho has scored just three times this season, twice in Serie A and once in the UEFA Champions League, playing 2,745 minutes for Napoli, a total of 35 appearances so far. Scoring goals is a bonus for the Brazilian-born Italy international – his strength is linking up the defence with the attack, a box-to-box midfielder if you will.

Jorginho is a strong passer of the ball, good at putting through balls into dangerous areas, also with key passes but his concentration is a big aspect of his game. A great signing for whoever is interested in signing him this summer.

Jorginho could be torn between signing for Manchester United or Manchester City

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has once again been linked to Napoli midfielder Jorginho ahead of the summer transfer window. At the end of the season, Michael Carrick will hang up his boots and take up a seat on the bench, as a coach. Marouane Fellaini is also tipped to be leaving the Old Trafford club, meaning Mourinho may need to sign two new midfielders in a bid to strengthen the engine of his squad ahead of the biggest season yet – taking on the might that is Manchester City.

Just over a month ago, United were going to go head to head with City to sign Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk. Reports on Wednesday suggested that City were no longer interested in the Brazilian, opting instead for Brazilian-born Jorginho, a player United and Liverpool had been linked to already this season. The Italian international will most likely cost upwards of £50 million this summer and with City being on a budget, according to ‘cheque book manager’ Pep Guardiola.

Mourinho is said to hold Jorginho at the top of his wish-list this summer, a list which is also said to contain Jean-Micheal Seri, Fred, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and even Carlos Soler. All players have been linked to the club at some point, some not for a good few months, others a bit longer, most will be recycled through the daily newspapers between here and Timbuktu between now and the closure of the summer transfer window, which will come before the Premier League season starts.

The reports state that Guardiola, seemingly looking to get rid of Yaya Toure, seeking to ease the reliance on Fernandinho, bringing in a new midfielder to help his side ‘dominate for years to come’ which is something the ‘excited’ City supporters think will happen, probably because it happened to Manchester United. That said, those same supporters feel that United’s dominance has ended, meaning it can never come back. They are excited, aren’t they?

It is suggested that United will ‘have to work hard’ to sign Jorginho this summer. The club has already held ‘outline’ talks with the player’s representatives. It is also stated that United, who allegedly missed out on the player last summer, are ready to ‘hijack’ City’s potential deal for the Italian international. All these buzz words by the media seem to suggest something is actually happening, even when something may not be happening, yet anyway. I guess they have newspapers to sell and click bait traffic to lure on the internet.

Napoli are said to be keen on cashing in on Jorginho this summer and despite Liverpool being once linked to the player, it would seem the two Manchester clubs are the only option for the Brazilian-born Italian international. Napoli has offered Jorginho a new contract, but the 26-year-old is up for a new challenge, away from Italy. Whether Mourinho or Guardiola get their man this summer, it is going to be eventful with City seeking to reinvest in their squad, to continue their rise – which could not be done without an injection of money, with United looking to challenge them.

Manchester United target could be sold by Napoli this summer – reports

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has already suggested the clubs central midfield will be a priority in the summer with Michael Carrick expected to hang up his boots, not to mention the fact that Marouane Fellaini’s contract at the club will expire and at this moment in time there is nothing to suggest the Belgian will remain at the Theatre of Dreams. United have already been linked to the likes of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Jean-Michael Seri, Carlos Soler and more recently Toni Kroos – all of whom could do a job at United.

One player who has previously been linked to United is Napoli midfielder Jorginho. A lot has been discussed in the media about the Brazilian-born Italy international with reports now suggesting that the Serie A side could ‘sacrifice’ the player in the summer. It has been reported that the player’s entourage had travelled to Manchester in January, although no confirmation of that was made by either club or the player’s representatives. However, Jorginho’s agent, Joao Santos has confirmed the player could be sold in the summer, despite the player being happy in Naples.

“I think we’ll discuss a renewal at the end of the season, as it’s not the moment to talk about that because he still has a long contract. He wants to stay, although we’ll have to see if Napoli agree with that. If a player like Torreira arrives from Sampdoria, then that will require an important investment and Jorginho could be sacrificed to make way.

“I think they’d rather sell Jorginho than Amadou Diawara, who is younger. It’s an issue of mentality, it’s a family at Napoli and they all play for each other. Right now everyone is concentrated on the Scudetto, an objective they’ve been missing. He has been there for four years now and feels Neapolitan.”

Jorginho is a deep-lying midfielder who would slot in well with both Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic, thus allowing Pogba to play his favoured role and play to his strengths, not playing a defensive midfield role which is not always bringing the best of his abilities. That said, every United player will be expected to play different roles throughout a season as it is the team which needs to benefit and a combination of injury, illness and fatigue will mean that players will be played out of position from time to time – that is all part and parcel of the game.

This season, Jorginho has played 25 times for Napoli – 22 times in the Serie A, once in the Coppa Italia and two times in the UEFA Champions League. The Italy international has scored three goals, including one against Manchester City in the Champions League, also assisting four times. The player has had 15 shots on goal, five of those on target, meaning a third of his shots threaten the opposition, on average anyway. WhoScored have given Jorginho a 7.13 rating in all competitions.

Jorginho is known to be very strong with his through balls and his passing, also the ability to make important key passes. Defensively, the Italy international is a strong tackler, has great concentration also having the ability to intercept passes. The 26-year-old also likes to do layoffs and make short passes – which could be something that Mourinho is looking for at the club to keep his side in control of the ball.

This Season in the Serie A, Jorginho has made 22 appearances, scoring two goals. He has a 36% shot accuracy, has created 32 chances for his teammates, holds an 89% passing accuracy, averages a 14-metre passing length, has won 41% of his duels, averages two defensive actions per match and has committed one defensive error this season. In the Champions League, Jorginho has played twice, scoring one goal. He has 100% shot accuracy – having one shot on goal and scoring. He has created three chances, has an 86% passing accuracy – averaging 13-metre passes.

Jorginho could offer a lot to both Mourinho and United if the interest in the player is solid and it is possible to do a deal. However, there have been many players touted in the media of late and the overall record of the media getting things like this right is not all that good. Jorginho was once described as United’s main target this summer, that label has been given to Toni Kroos in the last few days. We all know the media concoct stories to keep their income coming in, not actually informing anyone of anything relevant – other than supposition, of course.
