Marco Verratti offered to Manchester United after meeting with PSG boss Thomas Tuchel

Manchester United have reportedly been offered Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti this summer after talks with new manager Thomas Tuchel left the Italian facing criticism. The playmaker had been expected to play a leading role under Tuchel this coming season with the former Borussia Dortmund manager tasked with turning the fortunes of the French champions in the UEFA Champions League this coming season. It has been stated that the meeting with the 25-year-old midfielder and Tuchel did not go as was expected.

Reports from Italy by Calciomercato state that Verratti’s agent, Mino Raiola had contacted United to sound them out over a possible move for the midfielder this summer, something that Raiola does pretty often with reports of him doing the same for Paul Pogba, which was revealed by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola ahead of the Manchester derby in April, a game which United won 3-2 with Pogba scoring a brace at the start of the second half.

It is said that during the meeting, the 44-year-old manager gave Verratti his views on his shape – Tuchel has a strict fitness regime in order to get the best out of his players. It seems Verratti did not like the criticism, which may have been just or unjust, and this, albeit reportedly, seems to be how the player and his agent have reacted. Verratti is, or was, regarded as one of the best creative talents in Europe and United have held an interest in him over the past few years.

Raiola is said to have contacted four of Europe’s top clubs with the view of placing Verratti at one of those teams, said to be United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Juventus. It is stated that Barcelona declined the offer immediately, whilst both Real Madrid and Juventus stated that they were not in a position to make a bid, presumably because of a lack of funds or that they had other options at the time. United are said to be thinking over a move with Jose Mourinho seeking another central midfielder this with Michael Carrick now retired and Marouane Fellaini’s contract ceasing on Saturday.

United have close relations with Mino Raiola, especially in the last two years with Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku all signing for the Old Trafford club, each were represented by Raiola at the time they signed for the club. Mkhitaryan and Ibrahimovic have now left the club for Arsenal and LA Galaxy respectively. United will be seeking to overhaul their squad this summer with many players falling short of the required standard, which could see exits happen this summer also.

It is widely reported that Anthony Martial wants to leave the Old Trafford club this summer, which is something United have suggested is not what they want. The Frenchman was discussion a new contract for around eight months before his agent, Philippe Lamboley gave quotes to the media suggesting his clients wish this summer. However, United have him contracted for another year, with the option of a further year to be added on, which puts them in a commanding position with reports of a near £100 million price tag on the player.

If United bring in a player like Verratti, it could also spell the end for one or two players who found it hard to fortify their positions in the squad last season. Ander Herrera is one of those players and he is wanted by his former club with suggestions of a €30 million offer made to United. Also, Juan Mata, who at times was an unused substitute, could also find himself seeking a new club this summer, two years after journalists called the end of his United career with Mourinho coming in as the manager.

It could be an interesting summer for United. There are certainly a number of players being linked to the club repeatedly. However, just because there are reports, does not mean that the club is actually interested in that particular player. The media seemed to know nothing about Diogo Dalot until just before he signed for the Old Trafford.

Marco Verratti linked to Manchester United as the media begin to clutch straws?

Manchester United will seemingly need to sign two midfielders this summer with Marouane Fellaini on his way out of the club. The signing of Fred is reportedly close to completion after the Brazilian held his medical with the club on Monday. Paris Saint-Germain’s Italian midfielder Marco Verratti, once linked to United, has been linked to the Old Trafford club again on Monday. As you can imagine, when United are linked to players, newspapers sell more copies and have more hits on their websites, so it all amounts to money.

It is said that Mourinho has added Verratti to his hit list this summer and is prepared to spend £75 million on the 25-year-old. The Italian has spent six years at Paris Saint-Germain and it is suggested that United are encouraged by the availability of the player this summer. United have been linked to a long list of midfielders this summer, Fred is seemingly close to signing for the Old Trafford club after having a medical on Monday, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has been linked also, with the price of the player too high for many clubs to warrant spending on the 23-year-old.

Juventus are also said to be interested in Verratti and he could fancy a move back to his native Italy this summer. However, United would be able to offer better personal terms for the player, which is something that he would not get with Juventus. United knew that they needed to overhaul the clubs midfield this summer with Michael Carrick retiring and heading into coaching and the increasing likelihood that Fellaini will leave the club on the expiry of his contract this summer.

A midfield consisting of Fred, Verratti, and Paul Pogba would be something that could see United cut the distance between them and Manchester City ahead of the new season but United would need to add in other areas in order to challenge Pep Guardiola’s City side. Verratti is a player that could help United control the game in midfield, a bit like how Carrick did during his career and the Italian has once been compared to Hernandez Xavi, formerly of Barcelona, based on the way he plays.

Verratti, despite falling from grace over the last season or so, not losing his playing style or his ability, but once being a target for the major clubs in Europe and now seemingly off the radar. Having a player like  him, who could resurrect his career in the Premier League would be a big gamble for Mourinho and United, but football is a game of gambles and most United supporters have been moaning at various stages of the season that Mourinho seems too defensive, not actually thinking about the weak defence the club has, which was strengthened by David De Gea.

I don’t see much other than speculation to suggest that United are signing Verratti. They may be interested in the player, as other clubs may be also. But to say he is a major target for United, that is something that just does not wash at the moment. A signing such as Verratti would be a good one if he is given the time by the supporters to adapt and get his career on the road again, but patience and modern-day Manchester United supporters seem to go together like two magnets of the same side, pushing each other a distance apart.
