Renato Sanches speculation can now end – reports

Manchester United are reportedly set to miss out on Renato Sanches again this summer with Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirming that the player will only be allowed to leave the Allianz Arena on loan this summer. United were interested in the Portuguese midfielder last summer with incoming manager Jose Mourinho keen to sign his compatriot but with Louis van Gaal still to be sacked, United could not move for the player without it becoming prematurely known that Van Gaal was to be sacked. The Bundesliga champions signed the player very early last summer, which saw United miss out.

There were reported earlier in the summer but it is not yet known if the reports are correct, but United are looking for a midfielder with Fabinho, Nemanja Matic and Eric Dier all linked to the club, none of them seemingly getting close to a deal so it makes me wonder if United have their minds set on another target, pulling it out of the blue like they have done recently with Romelu Lukaku, signing him from under the noses of Chelsea, the club he was thought to be heading to. The fact that Bayern seems to only want Sanches leaving on loan this summer would suggest they have plans for the player for the future, which was probably why they signed him last summer.

The 19-year-old had a good summer a year ago winning the European Championships with Portugal, also starting his career at a new club where he did not see as much action as he may have hoped, which has frustrated the player. Sanches played 25 times for Carlo Ancelotti’s side last season, starting just six matches in the Bundesliga and failing to score a single goal for the Bundesliga champions. Now that James Rodriguez has signed for Bayern, albeit on loan for the next two seasons, it will cast more doubt on Sanches and his game time this coming season, which could be why a loan spell seems to be touted for him. Rummenigge, reported by The Sun, said:

“Renato Sanches did not have an easy first year here and it is very important that he plays with some continuity. We will still decide whether he stays with the team or if he is loaned, after we have made all our purchases. He urgently needs to play after the last half of the season, which was neither satisfactory for him nor for the club.”

United’s summer plans seem to be starting to materialise with Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku signing for the Old Trafford club which will go a long way to helping the site out after their frustrations last season, especially in the Premier League. Jose Mourinho is still reportedly looking to sign a winger and a midfielder with many players linked in including Ivan Perisic, Fabinho, Dier and Matic currently linked to the Theatre of Dreams. United seem to have things in the works with the media playing catch up and using the scatter gun approach to report who the club are interested in. Time will tell but United’s interest in Sanches seems to have expired with crappy journalism the reason he has been linked, just because he was before.

Bayern Munich lower asking price for Portuguese midfielder

Manchester United seem to be given more of a chance to sign Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches this summer with Bayern Munich reportedly looking to offload the player from their squad. Last summer, the Bundesliga champions signed the player from Benfica for an initial €35 million fee which was expected to have many add-ons attached with the player expected to reach the dizzy heights every world class footballer reaches. That just has not happened in his first season in Munich though. A few days ago now there were reports suggesting United could be in with a chance of signing the player Jose Mourinho missed out on last season after the club sacked Louis van Gaal and Bayern jumped in and signed Sanches.

The 19-year-old failed to break into the Munich side under Carlo Ancelotti, which will have come as a surprise to many with Sanches expected to be the next big thing coming out of Portugal, perhaps on the same road to success as William Carvalho who was the next big thing a few years back. Sanches started just nine matches for Ancelotti’s side, which in developmental terms, it was probably not enough to get the best out of the player. If United had signed the player, the same may have happened, but when you look at the injuries United sustained in the midfield area last season, you could see Sanches being given a chance in the Premier League, the UEFA Europa League and quite possibly in the Emirates FA Cup – but hindsight is great isn’t it?

In May, German news source Bild suggested the Bavarian club would sell the player this summer if they received the €35 million spent on the player a year ago, now though, it is being reported by German magazine Kicker, relayed by The Metro, that Bayern would let the player leave the Allianz Arena for €26 million, which when you consider the player’s potential, age and the fact transfer fees are reaching obscene levels, it could demonstrate a good deal for United, if Mourinho still retains an interest in the Sanches. This summer, the midfield is something United are looking to strengthen with the departures of both Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger early in 2017, meaning United were left with Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick, Paul Pogba, and Marouane Fellaini as experienced players.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah could also be seen as a contender to play in the midfield, but his defensive attributes could see him being utilised as a right-back, the position he has played under Louis van Gaal for the Old Trafford club, or even as a central defender, a position he has played in at times during his coaching in the club’s Academy. Saying that six midfielders would be good for United, if all of the names mentioned remain at the club of course, as United will play a similar number of matches this season, from the start of the season at least, which could see United need extra reinforcements. At this moment in time, Nemanja Matic and Fabinho are the two players linked to United, with Sanches being another option although not firmly linked.

Renato Sanches on Manchester United radar should he leave Munich

Manchester United have been linked to Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches, a player that was linked to Manchester United last summer, but made an early move to the Bundesliga champions with United changing their manager from Louis van Gaal to Jose Mourinho. Sanches is a player with the world at his feet, but in Munich, he has struggled to make an impact with The Sun suggesting the midfielder would favour a move away from the Bundesliga this summer. Sanches is currently playing for Portugal’s U21’s side in the European Championships, ahead of what could be a £30 million, or more, move to Old Trafford, should Mourinho be interested in the player – he seemed disappointed last summer as he was a player on his radar.

Sanches is one of the high-profile players to come from Benfica, a club where United almost always had an interest whether it be Victor Lindelof, Nicolás Gaitán or other players at the club – United and Benfica almost always seem to be linked. Sanches could be a good fit for United based on his good understanding of the game, his positional discipline, his vision, creativity and the fact he can play as a holding midfielder, thought to be a position Mourinho is looking to fill the summer with Fabinho, Eric Dier and Nemanja Matic all linked to the Old Trafford club. Sanches can also play in the box-to-box role, his favoured position with United also linked to Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan.

Last summer, Bayern Munich paid around £30 million for the Portuguese midfielder, a fee with had a number of clauses attached which could increase the fee for the player in the years to come, should he keep developing. The Bundesliga champions would almost certainly try to get at least the fee paid for the player a year ago, possibly more, which would be more likely. The 19-year-old has a connection to Mourinho, sharing the same agent Jorge Mendes of Gestifute, which could see the Portuguese manager being offered the player as the best transfer likelihood for the player and Bayern Munich unless other clubs are interested in the teenager. Juventus are said to be monitoring the situation, which could see them swoop for the player.

Sanches may not be the player Mourinho is looking for, but after missing out on the player last summer, should he be available this summer, missing out on his again could be a big mistake. United may want to become that club with the ability to be the best in the world on the football pitch again, already being the best club in the world in a financial aspect, the best player in the world may not help the club achieve that based on the problems in signing already established players in the past. Sanches et al could be a much better fit for United – young, willing to learn and hungry for success. If the player wants to become the best in the world, achieving that whilst playing for a club determined to be the same would be a much better achievement.
