Manchester United linked to Bayern Munich duo who could strengthen the midfield and the attack

Manchester United are reportedly plotting what is said to be a huge double swoop for Bayern Munich duo Thiago Alcantara and Robert Lewandowski this summer. It has been suggested that the Spanish and Poland internationals are both being made available by the Bundesliga champions this summer but that there would be a lot of competition for United and other teams interested in the pair. Jose Mourinho is apparently desperate to strengthen his midfield and attack this summer and the pair could do just that.

The reports come from the Independent, which in my opinion would cast a massive cloud over the fact that this is nothing but speculation. Many see Miguel Delaney as a trustworthy journalist but whenever he writes speculatory articles such as this, they tend to be more speculation than fact. You might feel differently about his knowledge and connections which may make him credible but personally, I just don’t see anything like this materialising.

United have been linked with Thiago Alcantara before, seemingly coming close to signing the player in the summer of 2013, with the player opting to sign for Bayern Munich from Barcelona instead, despite Spanish teammate David De Gea playing a part in the player coming to the club. United have also been linked with the Spaniard earlier this summer, which may have been something likely if United did not sign Fred and Marouane Fellaini had not signed a new contract at the club.

Robert Lewandowski is a player United have been linked with in the past. The summer Robin van Persie made the move from Arsenal, United were linked to the Polish international but nothing seemed to materialise. In the years gone by, United have continued to be linked with Lewandowski but nothing seems to have continued those reports. Earlier this summer, it was reported that the Pole would be up for leaving Bayern Munich but recently that seems to have cooled with suggestions the player could stay put.

However, Lewandowski has been targeted by both Real Madrid and Chelsea, who could rival United if these reports are actually true. Real Madrid has the money to spend this summer with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving for Juventus, despite suggestions that both Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard could be on their way to the Santiago Bernabeu. Chelsea may also be seeking to strengthen their frontline with Maurizio Sarri now managing the club and suggestions that Alvaro Morata could return to Juventus, which could see Gonzalo Higuaín move to London.

If anything, Thiago could be a target for United. However, United will be waiting to see if Barcelona make a move to re-sign the Spanish midfielder, which could be the move he opts for instead. United will need to get something done in the transfer window this summer as the signing of Diogo Dalot, Fred, and Lee Grant will not be enough to put them on par with Premier League champions Manchester City. There will need to be something much bigger happening in the background for something like that to happen.

United are still currently linked to Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, which again seems to be something we have seen before. No deal likely to happen. Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld could be something similar despite United being linked with the player all summer. The fee Spurs want for the Belgian is considered to be too high, considering that the player can leave the club for £25 million next summer. With this in mind, it could mean that both United and Spurs could actually do a deal before the window closes on the 9 August 2018.

Polish striker on the radar of Manchester United and Chelsea but it is not that straight forward

Manchester United and Chelsea will reportedly go head to head to lure Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski to the Premier League this summer. Sky Sports News started the rumour suggesting the player is keen to leave the Bundesliga and his future could become much clearer in the next fortnight. It is suggested that the player will need to persuade Bayern to let him leave the club. Lewandowski’s current contract expires in the summer of 2021 but the player has hired super-agent Pini Zahavi to negotiate a deal.

It may not be an easy task for Zahavi as Bayern are not short of cash and will be looking to keep their prized striker at the Allianz Arena next season. Lewandowski has scored 97 goals in 108 games for his club, which is a great record for the player and club to have. Losing him could see problems for the Bundesliga leaders unless they bring in an effective replacement. It is said that the Premier League duo will face ‘stiff competition’ with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain would be interested in the Polish striker.

This season, Lewandowski has made 34 appearances in all competitions, starting 31 times and coming off the bench three times. He has scored a total of 29 goals, assisting a further three goals. The Polish international has shot on goal 152 times, with 65 of those shots being on target. It is not a bad set of statistics for the Bayern player and one that many clubs would be interested in. This season, United are somewhat short in the striker department with Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the sidelines for seven months, making a return to action and sitting on the sidelines again.

The Swedish international signed a new one-year contract in the summer and has been linked to LA Galaxy in the summer. If Ibrahimovic does leave United, they may need to bring in a new striker, which is where the interest in Lewandowski (today) and Mauro Icardi (Monday) seems to be coming from. As Jose Mourinho currently has Romelu Lukaku to lead the line and he has been trusted for the majority of the season, scoring his 22nd goal of the season (in all competitions) against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Mourinho also has Marcus Rashford, who is two-years into his Manchester United career and it has been suggested by Jamie Redknapp that Rashford faces alienation by Mourinho after Alexis Sanchez signed for the club during the January transfer window. That is not the case though as Rashford was injured for much of the last month, which is the main reason he has not played, that and not being all that effective, which is something every striker will go through a period of.

I am unconvinced of these reports though, based on the source, who have not been all that great in the past. It makes me wonder (although I have not looked) whether Sky Bet have a market on Lewandowski heading to United or Chelsea this summer. If so, and it is something that has materialised since yesterday, I would be more sceptical of this report. Lewandowski is a talented striker. United have been linked in the past, mainly in 2012 when Sir Alex Ferguson signed Robin van Persie from Arsenal. There have been links since, but nothing has ever materialised.

Perhaps Robert Lewandowski is seeking a new bumper contract from the Bundesliga leaders…

Which striker could Manchester United be interested in this summer?

Manchester United cooled their interest in Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann last Thursday with a view of looking for a new striker rather than a player considered to be a number ten, despite being able to lead the line and play on either wing. For the last few seasons, United have been short on strikers, which is a problem. This was the case during the past season too with Zlatan Ibrahimovic being heavily relied upon, getting through much of the season and doing well, but when he was suspended, or latterly injured, United’s reliance moved onto Marcus Rashford, which worked, but was not all that ideal. Wayne Rooney was another option but over the past few seasons, the United captain has lost his strikers instinct, which was shown in Michael Carrick’s testimonial on Sunday at Old Trafford. Just who could Jose Mourinho be looking to sign this summer to lead the like for United? Here are some options, both realistic and unrealistic.

Romelu Lukaku

The Everton striker is on the move this summer and will have a hefty fee placed on his name, said to be around £100 million, which is a huge figure even with the money in today’s game. Lukaku is a beast when he is on form, but during that past season, that has not always been the case. The Belgian scored 26 goals for the Goodison Park club during the past season, which is not bad considering the club he played for, but if he was in form for much of the season, he could have led his side in to a better finishing position in the league, maybe with them not having to qualify for a UEFA Europa League place next season. Lukaku has confirmed that he has now reached an agreement with another club ahead of the new season. Could that be with Manchester United?

Alvaro Morata

The Real Madrid forward has been linked with AC Milan in recent weeks, with suggestions made that only United are currently interested in signing the Spaniard. Fresh from helping his side lift the UEFA Champions League trophy for the third time in four seasons, Morata, a former Juventus player, moving back to Madrid last summer after a buyback clause in his contract was activated, it seems that the Madrid club will be cashing in on the player this summer, something maybe to help fund their bid for AS Monaco youth prodigy Kylian Mbappe, who may want to remain at the principality club for another season, something seconded by his club. Morata could be an option for United this summer, but no firm interest seems to have been reported.

Andrea Belotti

The Italian striker has been linked with United already this summer, but his €100 million release clause would be one of the main factors of whether there was any solid interest in the player from the Old Trafford club. Belotti made 37 appearances for Torino during the past season, scoring 28 goals, which is something United would want in their team next season – incidentally, the same number Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored before he suffered that season-ending injury back in April. Belotti is a decent striker, maybe not one of the best in the world, but certainly on the right track and heading in the right direction. United will be looking for at least one striker, but whether that is Belotti remains to be seen.

Alexandre Lacazette

The Frenchman was seemingly on his was to Atletico Madrid this summer, but the clubs ban from FIFA was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport last week, which means he could move to the Spanish capital, but would not be eligible to play for the club until January, missing the first half of the season which could effectively rule him out for France ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Russia next summer. Lacazette was linked to United last week and has previously been a target for Arsenal and Liverpool. The player could opt to remain at Lyon for at least the first half of the season, moving to Atletico in January, but may find it easier to remain at Lyon for another year, fighting for his place in France’s World Cup squad, should they make next summer’s tournament. United will have other options, but two years ago, Lacazette was the many most United supporters were raving about if that means anything.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The Gabon international is rumoured to he heading to Paris Saint-Germain this summer with the player wanting to move to Real Madrid after Borussia Dortmund. The 27-year-old scored 31 goals in 32 matches during the past season, so he offers what United are looking for – goals. Aubameyang is a €70 million target for PSG but reports suggest that United could go head-to-head with the French club in the race to sign the once Manchester City target. Aubameyang would be a good signing, as would any striker who has the ability and potential to score the goals United need in order to put on a better challenge in the Premier League and beyond next season. The league was the main area where United fell short, drawing too many matches, especially at home. Whoever Jose Mourinho and United are looking for this summer, they will be a player who will add something the club have not currently got.
