Toni Kroos is one of Jose Mourinho’s top summer target – reports

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is seeking Toni Kroos as one of his top transfer targets according to a report from Spanish newspaper AS. The claim in the article has suggested that Mourinho met with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward earlier in the week where he outlined his desire to bring the German midfielder to the Old Trafford club. Exactly how the Spanish newspaper know this is not actually stated in the article, so treat this with a pinch of salt.

The Real Madrid midfielder really has no reason to leave the Spanish capital after winning his third UEFA Champions League trophy in three years with the club winning it four times in the past five years. Kroos was a player linked to the Old Trafford club during the David Moyes era, which lasted around nine months, and there were rumours that Kroos had been lined up for a move to the Theatre of Dreams in Moyes’ second summer transfer window. However, Louis van Gaal was the manager then and the transfer did not materialise.

It is stated in the article that Kroos ‘could be essential’ to strengthening Mourinho’s squad this summer and his arrival would compliment Paul Pogba. It is also stated that Woodward is ‘willing to make a great offer’ for the 28-year-old German, who earlier in the week saw his side beaten by South Korea in the World Cup, which saw the current world champions finish fourth in their group and exit the tournament. It is, however, suggested that Real Madrid has not indicated that Kroos is for sale this summer.

The report also goes into detail suggesting that any move for Kroos would be ‘complicated’ for United. It will probably bring that old tale of David De Gea leaving Manchester United for Real Madrid, despite the fact the Spanish number one is reportedly ready to sign a new contract at the Theatre of Dreams once Spain are out of the World Cup, whether they are eliminated or progress to win the tournament, which is not something anyone can rule out at this moment in time. They face Russia in the last 16 at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on Sunday.

It is suggested that United remain determined to land Kroos as they want to make him one of the leaders of the team, something which is lacking at the club, although the leadership shown by Romelu Lukaku in the Belgium squad with him giving the team talks ahead of matches could indicate that United already have a leader in their striker. Kroos’ contract at Real Madrid does not expire until the summer of 2021 and he has a £443 million release clause as part of that contract.

New Real Madrid manager, Julen Lapetegui, the replacement for Zinedine Zidane who resigned from the post days after winning the Champions League this summer, would no doubt want to keep Kroos in his side this summer. He does need to find parity with other stars though as Gareth Bale has indicated that he will sit with his agent this summer in a bid to play more football at the club and Cristiano Ronaldo also indicated that his days at the Spanish club could well be over, but we have all heard that one before.

I’m not completely believing of this report. Now that Marouane Fellaini is tipped to sign a new two-year contract at United, would there be a need to sign another midfielder this summer? William Carvalho has also been linked to the club, which is a puzzling link to make but also one which does not seem to offer much proof that United are in for the Portuguese international. This report is not all that solid either. Will United sign Toni Kroos this summer? I don’t think they will, to be honest.
