Timo Werner would rather play for Manchester United over Liverpool

Manchester United and Liverpool will go head to head in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday but there has already been a blow for the Merseysiders after RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner stated that he would rather play for the Old Trafford club over the one from Anfield. It is a pretty funny declaration for the 21-year-old, even with Liverpool playing expansive, attacking football this season and scoring more than 100 goals in all competitions, the lure of United seems obvious.

Werner has played 65 times for his Bundesliga club, scoring 37 goals since signing for RB Leipzig from VfB Stuttgart on a four-year contract in the summer of 2016. This season alone, Werner has scored 16 goals, assisting a further three in 33 appearances, six of them from the bench. Werner has attempted 98 shots on goal, 45 of those on target – 16 finding the back of the net which is a good strike rate for a player of his age. The experience the forward has had since moving clubs has been of benefit for him.

His performances this season have led to the player being linked with Premier League clubs, a league he would like to play in at some point in his career. In the April edition of FourFourTwo magazine, Werner stated his desire to play for United over their bitter rivals, Liverpool, saying:

“Yes, playing in the Premier League is a dream for me. I would like to play for two or three clubs, and Manchester United are one of those clubs. But probably not in the next few years – later, when my English is a little bit better! I’m very comfortable at RB Leipzig, though.

“Manchester United and Liverpool were the teams I watched quite a lot in England. They were the two that I’m a little bit a fan of, because they have so much history. When Alex Ferguson was the coach, United won everything and were outstanding.

“In Liverpool, it’s also their stadium and the atmosphere. But when I have to decide, I’m more Manchester United than Liverpool. I’m now at a point where at some stage in the future I’d like to play in a team that wins titles.”

United have been linked to many strikers over the past few weeks with Robert Lewandowski and Mauro Icardi being two of the names put forward in the media. With Jose Mourinho confirming that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will most likely leave the club in the summer, there will be a vacancy at the club. United have Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford, and Anthony Martial who can all play in the striker’s role, plus new signing Alexis Sanchez, who has played in the position at Arsenal, not yet at United.

Depending on Mourinho’s plans with Martial, Rashford, and Sanchez it may only leave Lukaku as the clubs main striker. If that is the case, this summer may see another forward come into the club to strengthen the position, which is pretty strong with the names mentioned already. Sir Alex Ferguson usually had four strikers on his books, which gave plenty of strength for an entire season with the ability to chop and change his strike partnership. This summer though, the midfield seems the main priority.

It is good to see players such as Werner wanting to play for United. That does not mean it will ever happen. Many players dream of playing for United and the majority do not fulfill that dream. Choosing United over Liverpool, especially in the days ahead of the second clash of the season between the two sides is funny though and something which may result in the Liverpool supporters stating that Timo Werner is not the player they need anyway, which may well be the case.
