Why Jose Mourinho must start choosing form over name and price tag

It has been evident that of late Mourinho has been trying to persevere with players who have not necessarily been in the best form but have a name and a price tag that will excite fans and give them hope that the good times are back at Old Trafford.

However, players such as Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba have failed to live up to potential as of late, but are still getting regular starts under Mourinho. This is something which myself and many fans and pundits feel is wrong and hungrier and more in form players need to be given a chance.

Now, Sanchez and Pogba aren’t the only players who are failing to live up to the high standards the boss and the fans have set, but they are players who are currently not in the best form and haven’t been for some weeks.

Now that we are entering the later stages of the season, where second place and a potential trophy is up for grabs, Mourinho has to start playing players in form or our season has the capacity to fizzle out.

There are a host of players behind both Pogba and Sanchez who are ready to play and give more for the team than they are at the moment. Both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have struggled for games for United since Sanchez joined in January, but prior to the Chilean’s arrival at Old Trafford were in terrific form for the Reds.

As well as Rashford and Martial, both Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata have the capacity to fill that role on the left-wing or in behind Romelu Lukaku, but are constantly in and out of the side and not given a consistent run in the team. The same goes for the centre of midfield where Pogba has struggled for form in recent weeks but is still playing.

Scott McTominay had a nice little run in the side, starting big games in both the league and the Champions League, but has just sat on the bench in recent weeks without any explanation.

Now, I’m like any other United supporter and I’m a big fan of both Pogba and Sanchez and in their best form, they can certainly take United back to the pinnacle of English football. But they are not currently playing their best football and other players deserve a chance to prove what they can do, at the expense of Pogba and Sanchez.

You never know, experiencing a period out of the team could prove to be a blessing in disguise and give the two players a bit of hunger back and want to prove they are worthy of their place in the starting line-up.

Mourinho is not averse to making big, controversial decisions, so why not drop these two world-class players on their day, and give some youngsters a chance to prove what they can do. Now is the time to do it as the season is concluding, and if United are to finish second and win the FA Cup, they need players who are in form and will give their utmost for the shirt.
