United join Liverpool and West Ham to sigh French central defender from Austrian club – reports

Oumar Solet could be available for £13 million or less this summer and could be another option for United

Manchester United have reportedly joined Liverpool and West Ham United in pursuit of RB Salzburg central defender Oumar Solet this summer. The 24-year-old has played for Laval, Lyon and RB Salzburg during his senior career after coming through the youth ranks at Laval and Lyon.

RMC Sport has reported that the Frenchman is keen to leave the Austrian club this summer in the hunt for UEFA Champions League football, which is not something he will bet at United or West Ham during the 2024/25 season. His contract at Salzburg ends in the summer of 2025.

United are keen to add more central defenders to the squad ahead of the 2024/25 season with United suffering many injuries in those positions during the last season. Also, Raphael Varane has left the club and the future of Jonny Evans is still up in the air at this time.

In January, the 24-year-old was suited by both RC Lens and Napoli but nothing ever happened regarding a move. This summer, a move to those clubs is less likely with Liverpool, United and West Ham looking at the player. He could leave Austria for £10 million to £13 million this summer.

During every transfer window, United are heavily linked to many players across the world of football and many of those players are not actively being considered by the Old Trafford club. Only time will tell is this is another one of those spurious links that journalists over the world place United in.

Solat made 28 appearances for his cub last season, scoring two goals and one assist in all competitions. At 24, Solar matches the profile set by minority stake holder Sir Jim Ratcliffe with the player also not having the Galactico profile that is no longer sought by the Red Devils.

It has been reported that with the Premier League trio tacking the 24-year-old, a host of German clubs are doing the same with Bayer Leverkusen, Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund having the player on a shortlist. United would be a good club for the player, if they are actually after signing him.

Of course, playing in the Champions League would not happen right away as United did not qualify in the elite European competition next season with them set to feature in the UEFA Europa League once again – but could qualify for the Champions League in the 2025/26 season.

I support Manchester United, the greatest English football team to have ever existed. Bruno Fernandes is the latest in a long line of players with great ability to play for the club. I idolised Bryan Robson, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, and Eric Cantona growing up.
