Manchester United have spent years searching for consistency at left-back. Injuries, squad imbalance and a lack of reliable depth have often left the position vulnerable, making it one of the most important areas to address. If United were to secure the signing of Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, they would be acquiring one of Europe’s most exciting young full-backs and a player capable of redefining the team’s attacking dynamics from the left side.
A Modern Full-Back Built for the Modern Game
At just 22 years old, Balde has already established himself as Barcelona’s first-choice left-back and a Spanish international. His rise through La Masia and into Barcelona’s senior side has showcased a player built for modern football: quick, technically gifted and fearless in possession.
What sets Balde apart is his athletic profile. He possesses explosive acceleration, tremendous pace over long distances and the ability to carry the ball through pressure. Rather than simply recycling possession, he actively drives his team forward, turning defensive situations into attacking opportunities in a matter of seconds.
For a Manchester United side that has often struggled to progress the ball consistently from wide areas, that quality alone would be invaluable.

Adding Width and Dynamism
One of the recurring issues for United in recent seasons has been the lack of natural width in attacking phases. When teams sit deep against them, the burden frequently falls on the wingers to stretch the pitch.
Balde would offer a different solution.
His natural instinct is to overlap aggressively and attack the space outside the winger. This would allow United’s left-sided attackers to move into more dangerous central positions while Balde provides the width. Whether linking with a direct winger or combining with an inverted forward, his movement would make United far less predictable.
His pace would also make him a significant weapon in transition. When United regain possession and look to counterattack, few full-backs in Europe can cover ground as quickly as Balde.
A Perfect Fit for High-Tempo Football
Premier League football increasingly rewards defenders who can recover quickly and contribute in both phases of play.
Balde’s recovery speed is arguably one of his greatest strengths. He can push high up the pitch and still possess the athleticism to recover defensively when attacks break down. This would give United greater freedom to commit numbers forward without exposing themselves as heavily on the counterattack.
His confidence in possession would also suit a side looking to dominate the ball more consistently. Having developed in Barcelona’s highly technical environment, he is comfortable receiving under pressure and progressing attacks through passing or dribbling.
Competition and Succession Planning
Luke Shaw has been one of United’s best performers when fit, but availability has often been an issue.
Bringing Balde to Old Trafford would provide both immediate competition and a long-term solution. Rather than relying on Shaw to carry the workload across an entire season, United could rotate two high-level options while managing minutes more effectively.
In the longer term, Balde has the profile to become the undisputed first-choice left-back for years to come.
His age, experience at elite level and room for further development make him an ideal player around whom a future squad could be built.

Areas for Improvement
No player arrives without risks.
While Balde excels going forward, there are moments when his positioning can be improved defensively. Like many attack-minded full-backs, he occasionally relies on his pace to recover from situations that might have been avoided through stronger positioning.
There would also be an adaptation period. The Premier League’s intensity and physical demands differ significantly from La Liga, and even the most talented players require time to adjust.
However, these concerns are relatively minor when balanced against his potential upside.
The Verdict
Alejandro Balde looks tailor-made for what Manchester United need from a modern left-back.
He would bring pace, athleticism, technical quality and attacking thrust to a position that has lacked consistency in recent years. His ability to stretch play, carry the ball forward and support attacks would immediately improve United’s left flank, while his age profile makes him a long-term investment rather than a short-term fix.
If United are serious about building a younger, more dynamic squad capable of competing at the highest level, Balde would represent one of the most exciting and logical additions available on the market today.
