Manchester United have completed the signing of 14-year-old Ipswich Town prospect Silva Mexes. The teenager confirmed his move to United through his social media channels and posed with a United shirt with his name and the famous number seven on it.

Mexes, 14 is the son of former Premier League player Robert Earnshaw, now 43 who played for Cardiff City, West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City, Derby County, Nottingham Forest and Blackpool in the United Kingdom, before moving to the MLS before retiring.

Announcing his transfer to United ahead of the 2024/25 season on his Instagram account, Mexes on signing for the Old Trafford club said;

“Very proud moment for me and my family to announce my signing for @manchesterunited. Thank you for everyone who has helped me on my journey so far. The work starts now #manchesterunited #signing #blessed.”

It has been reported that many Premier League heavyweights scouted the teenager before United made the move to sign the 14-year-old. It is obviously going to be a long road for the player, but if he performs well, he could make the U18 set up in a year or two, maybe sooner.

Robert Earnshaw, 43, made a heartfelt comment on his own social media channels regarding this son’s transfer to United from Ipswich, saying;

“This is really really special. My incredible son Silva Mexes Tyler-Earnshaw who is known as Silva Mexes has signed for Manchester United academy.

“I am so so proud. He has worked hard and it’s such a blessing to see him find his passion and make this journey. I love you son.

“I am your number one fan. I will support you in any way possible and I know you have the qualities Go be GREAT.”

United are a club that promotes youth to the first team and despite a stagnant decade where few have made the grade, United seemed to have started seeking the best available talent in different age groups over the last few years with the hope of great development for them.

This season has seen the rise of Kobbie Mainoo into United’s midfield with the player raise his game week on week and it recently being confirmed that United coach Steve McClaren picked Mainoo to man mark Erling Haaland in the Emirates FA Cup Final last weekend.

There will be many players in the academy for United who dream of doing the same as Mainoo has this season and seeing the 19-year-old do that will give them the belief to aim to achieve it themselves.

Sir Matt Busby said ‘if they are good enough they are old enough’, let that ring true once again in the not too distant future.

I support Manchester United, the greatest English football team to have ever existed. Bruno Fernandes is the latest in a long line of players with great ability to play for the club. I idolised Bryan Robson, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, and Eric Cantona growing up.
