Manchester United target £60 million Wolves striker but player says he’s happy – a lie or no aspirations to win anything?

Could United be onto something here or will they need to move onto another target this summer?

Manchester United have been linked with Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Matheus Cunha this summer, in what will end up being a busy summer for the Old Trafford club. United will be under a lot of pressure to get business done and turn around their form after a disastrous season.

Granted, United lifted the Emirates FA Cup this season after beating Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley just over a week ago but their domestic and European season were nothing more than abject failure. The club has been run into the ground by the Glazers – and they are still here.

Cunha, 25 will fit the profile for United based on his age and experience and is a good finisher having scored 14 goals and eight assists this season – better than most attacking players at United over the past season with only Rasmus Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes scoring more goals at United.

It has been reported that United had scouted Cunha on numerous occasions during the course of the 2023/24 season along with West Ham United striker Mohammed Kudus. It is clear that United need another striker at the club to take the pressure off Hojlund – who did well in his debut season.

It was reported that United would target Cunha in a £60 million bid for the Brazilian but he has come out and poured cold water on the prospective transfer by stating that the is happy at Wolves and his focus would be on having better season at The Molineux. He told Globo Esporte the following;

“Then we see that talk (United). But I’m very happy at Wolves. My focus is on resting and making the most of my time with my family. I’m very happy at Wolves. The focus now is on having better seasons and helping the club.”

It could well be that Cunha has been told to stay quiet by his agent and Wolves as any slight hint that he was not happy at Wolves and wanted to leave would lower any transfer fee for the club. It could also be that he is happy at Wolves and has no aspirations to win anything!

But that aside, Cunha is a competent player, having made 235 senior appearances for Wolves, Atletico Madrid, RB Leipzig, Hertha Berlin and FC Scion over the years, scoring 55 goals and 38 assists – he could do so much more with his career at a club offering European football.

I support Manchester United, the greatest English football team to have ever existed. Bruno Fernandes is the latest in a long line of players with great ability to play for the club. I idolised Bryan Robson, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, and Eric Cantona growing up.
