Manchester United record-breaking wonderkid Shola Shoretire is set to leave the club as a free agent at the end of the month, according to reports. The 20-year-old made his Premier League debut in a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United back in February 2021.
He also played in the UEFA Europa League a few days later in a play-off round against Real Sociedad in which United drew 0-0, having won 4-0 in the previous leg. He played one more match for United that season in the Premier League – a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Since Ten Hag took over the club in the summer of 2022, Shoretire has not made an appearance for United, despite being named as a substitute once. He was, however, loaned to Bolton Wanderers where he made 16 appearances, scoring one goal and two assists – which was not great for him.
Despite being United’s youngest ever debutant in a European competition, it seems that the 20-year-old is set to leave the club this summer. He has been offered a new contract and will be given a change in pre-season before being sent out on loan – but the player seems to what something else.
Obviously, the player has not found it easy to get into the first team at United, which is down to what he has been doing on the pitch. At United, you need to be the best to make the meteoric rise from the academy to the first team, as Kobbie Mainoo has demonstrated,
It could well be that Shoretire does not have what it takes to do the same thing. Over the years, some talented players have made first team debuts which has resulted in them leaving the club on the expiry of their contracts seeking pastured new to resurrect their careers.
Angel Gomes is one of those players who demonstrated promise but failed to find a regular place in the first team, leaving the club for Lille who loaned him to Boavista. To this day the former United player has not ‘set the world on fire’ scoring eight goals and 18 assists in 114 appearances.
Shoretire could find his feet at a smaller club but it seems certain that his future is away from the bright lights of the Theatre of Dreams. It will be for the best as despite the talent he has, the promise of him rising through the ranks has suffered a major stutter and United should let him leave.
