Manchester United interested in Italian midfielder with £21 million release clause

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing AS Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini. The 21-year-old Italian international has also attracted the attention of both Chelsea and Manchester City after impressing recently. The Giallorossi are understood to be desperate to secure Pellegrini to a new long-term contract because his £21 million release clause will make him an attractive option for clubs this winter. The reports, which come from The Mirror initially with The Sun crediting them in their own article suggest that the Premier League trio are monitoring the player.

Pellegrini has made 14 appearances in the Serie A this season, a total of 21 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals. In the Serie A, the 21-year-old has a shot accuracy of 77%, achieved a passing success rate of 82% with an average pass length of 17 metres. The player has created 23 chances for his teammates and averages at least two defensive actions per match, committing one defensive error so far this season. Pellegrini came through Roma’s Academy before being sold to Sassuolo for €1.25 million in 2015 with Roma activating a €10 million buy-back clause last summer.

The 21-year-old made 54 appearances with Sassuolo in his two seasons there (2015/16 and 2016/17), scoring 11 goals – the majority being scored in Serie A. Pellegrini is one of a number of young and talented players coming through in the Italian league and as part of his rise to fame he made his debut for Italy in the 5-0 thrashing of Liechtenstein in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Sadly, the player will not be able to play on the big stage in Russia this summer as Italy failed to qualify for the tournament.

Previously, Pellegrini had played for Italy’s U21 side in the UEFA European Championships, reaching the semi-final stage of the tournament last summer. The player scored a stunning overhead kick against Denmark in the tournament, which would have helped with his confidence ahead of this season, where he has seemingly been the subject of much attention from the Premier League. Whether the initial interest of the Premier League trio develops into more at this stage is unknown but with such a low release clause, he could offer value in the current market.

United manager Jose Mourinho will be looking to replace Marouane Fellaini ahead of the summer as the player has rejected a new contract at the Old Trafford club to find a new challenge elsewhere. He will need to be replaced and the midfield will need to be strengthened. Mourinho has previously stated that two to three players will leave the club and two to three players will be brought into the club. More needs to be done to ensure that United can compete with City as the void between the two sides currently is pretty vast.

Is Lorenzo Pellegrini a player Manchester United would benefit from buying this winter?
