Manchester United’s European history is packed with memorable battles against the continent’s biggest clubs, but meetings with Atlético Madrid have been surprisingly rare.
In fact, the two sides have faced each other only four times in competitive European competition. Yet despite the small sample size, their encounters have delivered plenty of drama, from a European Cup Winners’ Cup upset in the early 1990s to a frustrating Champions League exit three decades later.
As United prepare for another chapter in their rich European story, we look back at every competitive meeting with Atlético Madrid.

Atlético Madrid 3-0 Manchester United (October 1991)
Fresh from lifting the European Cup Winners’ Cup under Sir Alex Ferguson just months earlier, Manchester United entered the 1991-92 defence of their trophy with high hopes.
Standing in their way in the second round was an experienced Atlético Madrid side managed by Luis Aragonés.
The first leg at the Vicente Calderón proved a difficult evening for Ferguson’s men. Portuguese winger Paulo Futre was the star of the show, scoring twice, while Manolo added a late third as Atlético secured a commanding 3-0 victory.
United’s side featured several familiar names, including Peter Schmeichel, Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce, Denis Irwin, Paul Ince and Mark Hughes, but they were unable to cope with Atlético’s quality on the night.
The result left United facing an enormous task in the return leg at Old Trafford.

Manchester United 1-1 Atlético Madrid (November 1991)
Old Trafford believed in European comebacks long before the famous nights against Juventus, Roma and Paris Saint-Germain.
Mark Hughes gave United the perfect start when he struck after just four minutes, raising hopes of an unlikely recovery.
For much of the evening, United pushed for a route back into the tie, but Atlético remained composed and eventually extinguished any hopes of a turnaround when former Germany international Bernd Schuster equalised in the second half.
The match finished 1-1, meaning Atlético advanced 4-1 on aggregate and ended United’s defence of the European Cup Winners’ Cup.
It would be more than 30 years before the clubs met again.

Atlético Madrid 1-1 Manchester United (February 2022)
When the Champions League round of 16 draw paired the two sides together in 2022, there was a genuine sense that the tie could go either way.
Atlético struck first in Madrid through João Félix, whose superb header gave Diego Simeone’s side an early advantage. United struggled for long periods but stayed in the contest thanks to another crucial European contribution from Bruno Fernandes.
With 10 minutes remaining, Fernandes slipped a perfectly weighted pass into Anthony Elanga, who calmly finished past Jan Oblak to earn United a valuable 1-1 draw.
The late equaliser transformed the complexion of the tie and ensured everything would be decided under the lights at Old Trafford.
For Elanga, it was a breakthrough moment. For United, it felt like a result that could provide the momentum needed to progress.

Manchester United 0-1 Atlético Madrid (March 2022)
Unfortunately for United, the second leg became another frustrating European night against Atlético.
After a closely fought opening period, Renan Lodi scored the only goal of the game with a header shortly before half-time. United felt aggrieved in the build-up, believing Anthony Elanga had been fouled moments earlier, but the goal stood.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who had terrorised Atlético throughout his career, was unable to produce another European rescue act, while Atlético expertly managed the game in the second half.
The 1-0 victory gave Simeone’s side a 2-1 aggregate success and sent United out of the Champions League.
It also proved to be United’s last Champions League match under interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

The Overall Record
Manchester United have yet to record a competitive victory against Atlético Madrid in European competition.
The four meetings have produced:
- Atlético Madrid 3-0 Manchester United (1991)
- Manchester United 1-1 Atlético Madrid (1991)
- Atlético Madrid 1-1 Manchester United (2022)
- Manchester United 0-1 Atlético Madrid (2022)
That leaves Atlético unbeaten with two wins and two draws, advancing from both European ties between the clubs.

A Rare but Difficult Opponent
Unlike Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Juventus, Atlético Madrid have not crossed United’s path regularly in Europe.
Yet whenever the clubs have met, the Spanish side have proven a stubborn obstacle.
From Paulo Futre’s brilliance in 1991 to Diego Simeone’s tactical masterclass in 2022, Atlético have consistently found a way to frustrate United’s ambitions on the European stage.
For United supporters, it remains one of those unusual European records still waiting to be put right. And should the clubs meet again in the future, there would be no shortage of motivation to finally secure a first continental victory over Los Colchoneros.
