Manchester United in £27 million pursuit of Liverpool target Thiago Alcantara

Manchester United have reportedly joined Liverpool in the chase for Bayer Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara this summer. The player has already stated his desire to leave the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and the UEFA Champions League holders this summer in a bid for a new challenge. The player wanted to sign for United in the summer of 2013 but was rejected by David Moyes, who clearly had plans to chase the unattainable, rather than signing players that wanted to sign for the club.

Liverpool have been the frontrunners in the chase to sign the Spanish defender this summer but seem to be reluctant to spend the money in the player. Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is expecting a bid for the £27 million rated midfielder in the next few days, as reported by Norwegian journalist, Fredrik A. N. Filtvedt, who works for Dagbladet TV – who states that United are now in the mix to sign the 29-year-old. It could be a blow for Liverpool but it is expected that this could be a move to hurry Liverpool into concluding the prospective deal. Rummenigge was quoted by The Sun as saying:

“We are expecting an offer from another club in the next few days. He told us that at the end of his career, he would like to try something new.”

It has been reported in the last day or so that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already monitoring Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek this summer, a player who has been linked to United in 2020 already. If it was going to be either Van de Beek or Thiago, the 23-year-old Dutchman would be the better option in terms of longevity but if United were interested in signing both, it would be a massive upgrade on the likes of Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira and perhaps even Fred. Based on that, there could be something in this.

When United were linked to Thiago back in the summer of 2013, it was expected that the former Barcelona midfielder would sign for United. However, it has been suggested that Thiago begged Moyes to sign him that summer, but Moyes had decided that the Spaniard was ‘not the type of player that he wanted‘, which seems to be a very weird thing to say based on the player’s career in Germany since leaving Barcelona. It was a typical Moyes thing to do though, especially in the fact he signed one player that summer and that was not spectacular.

During his career in Germany, Thiago made a total of 235 appearances, scoring 31 goals and 37 assists at the club. The player won seven consecutive Bundesliga titles, four DFB-Pokal’s, three DFL-Supercups, one FIFA Club World Cup and one UEFA Champions League helping his club win the treble during the 2019/20 season. Based on this, it would show the type of player that Thiago was and how Moyes missed out on him by being David Moyes. It might have been different for United if Moyes had acted differently.

I fully expect Liverpool to end up signing Thiago this summer. These rumours seem to come at times whereby the interested club is not hurrying the deal so things happen to ensure that happens. Journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft does not think that United are being in this instance, so there could well be something in that, although personally, this seems to happen a lot. United do have a good relationship with Bayern Munich though, so I guess anything can happen. I would not be surprised if Liverpool got the signing over the line now though.

Manchester United hold transfer talks with Bayern Munich over French winger

Manchester United are reported interested in Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman, according to reports by The Sun. It is suggested that Coman could be an alternative to Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, who could cost United more than £100 million this summer with the Bundesliga club not seeking to lower their valuation of the player, not even because of the coronavirus pandemic. With Leroy Sane signing for Bayern, the Frenchman could be out of the picture at the club.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is intent on bettering his attacking line this summer with Sancho the preferred option but if that does not happen, he could find other players to do a similar job. It is reported by The Sun that Coman could be either a permanent signing or a loan option for the Old Trafford club. The Athletic have made the suggestion that United have already held talks with Bayern over the availability of Coman this summer, which is positive if true. It could also suggest that United see difficulty in signing Sancho.

If United ended up signing Coman on loan, it would suggest that Solskjaer has not given up hope on signing Sancho and could make the move next summer, which might be a better time because of the coronavirus pandemic ruining chances this summer, if that is the case. It is said that Solskjaer has scored Coman and that he could be seen as a player who would add a different dimension to the team, which is what we all want this summer. They even say the player is keen to make the move.

Since coming through the youth ranks into a first team environment, Coman has won a league title every season – eight seasons, also winning ten domestic cups. A player with a winning mentality could be good for United, especially as they want to challenge for the Premier League title and more next season, which means they will need to get early at it to take on the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, who seem to be the leaders in the Premier League at this moment in time.

Coman has played for Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Bayern Munich. In Paris, he won two Ligue 1 titles, one Coupe de la Ligue and one Trophée des Champions. At Juventus, the 24-year-old won two Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia and one Supercoppa Italiana. Since signing for Bayern, which is where his trophies have come thick and fast, the Frenchman has won five Bundesliga titles, three DFB-Pokal’s and one DFL Supercup. This season, in 35 appearances for Bayern, Coman has scored seven goals and seven assists. Which would be well received at United.

During his career, Coman has made a total of 190 appearances, scoring 34 goals and 37 assists. At PSG, the Frenchman made four appearances, scoring no goals or assists. At Juventus, where he played with Paul Pogba, also for his country, he made 22 appearances, scoring one goal and two assists. It is at Bayern where he has played most of his football, making 158 appearances and scoring 32 goals and 35 assists. It might not seem much and he is certainly not in the same category as Sancho, but he could be a player that gets United kicking in the right direction, if the interest and the reports here are in fact true.

Manchester United and Chelsea target Thiago Alcantara puts house up for sale giving suggestion transfer on the cards this summer – reports

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara has fuelled speculation that he will leave the Bundesliga champions this summer. The 29-year-old has reportedly put his house up for sale, which could only mean one thing – he’s moving house. Whether that is in Germany or elsewhere remains to be seen. Bayern know that the player wants to leave this summer.

Along with United and Chelsea, it is stated that Arsenal and Liverpool are also interested in signing the Spanish midfielder this summer. Bild journalist Christian Falk has confirmed that the player has put his house on the market, which seems to be the basis of this report. It is also stated that the player is trying to finalise a sale of the property, which is quick.

Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has already admitted that the player wants to leave the club this summer and this news will almost help the clubs interested in the player to get in contact with Bayern and make an offer, which in turn will lead them to speaking to the player’s agent and seeing if there is any interest in the player joining.

Thiago was once linked to United, managed then by David Moyes, who did not want the player, which is surprising as at the time United desperately needed a player like the Spaniard, instead ended up chasing players who were not interested and signing Marouane Fellaini, who was semi-successful at the club but the wrong player at the time.

It was once suggested that Liverpool had agreed personal terms with Thiago and that the two clubs were in advanced talks over a £31 million deal but nothing has been confirmed by either club, although there could be something in that with the player selling his property in Germany, unless he is just making way for an expected departure elsewhere.

During his time in Germany, Thiago has won the Bundesliga seven times, all consecutive seasons, also lifting the DFB-Pokal four times, the DFL-Supercup three times and the FIFA Club World Cup once – the player not being involved in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League victory that got them there. He could add some depth to United’s squad, if they are interested.

Manchester United eyeing shock move for Thiago Alcantara as Liverpool stall on potential deal – reports

Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea are apparently interested in hijacking Liverpool’s move for Bayern Munich and Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara this summer, according to reports. It is probably nothing, rather than something as the mainstream media like to link other clubs with a player who could be on his way elsewhere.

It is something that we have seen before time and time again, it creates another story further down the line that talks about how these clubs has missed out on a player that they may not have actually been interested in signing. It is suggested the the Premier League champions have agreed personal terms with the midfielder, with the deal seemingly stalled.

Spanish journalist Guillem Balague, who has not exactly been Mr Reliable of late has suggested that Liverpool could actually miss out on the player as they do not want to splash the cash this summer, which seems pretty strange as you would expect them to build upon their first league title in 30 years ready to defend that title next season?

During a Q&A on his YouTube channel, Balague revealed interest from both United and Arsenal with The Athletic’s David Ornstein also hinting that Chelsea could reignite their interest in the Spanish midfielder, 29, this summer. Bayern Munich Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed Alcantara wants to leave the club this summer, saying:

“He’s a great guy on and off the pitch. We negotiated with him and met all of his wishes. But Thiago Alcantara wants to leave.”

The Bundesliga champions would rather sell the player this summer that see hims leave the club as a free agent next summer, which could easily be the case, therefore they are not standing in his way. In 36 appearances for the German club this season, Thiago has scored three goals, assisting two more, which may not be great but he offers ability in the midfield.

In total, during his time at Bayern, Thiago has scored 31 goals and 37 assists in 231 appearances, playing as a central attacking midfielder, as a central midfielder and even as a defensive midfielder. He could offer a lot of depth for United, who will be seeking to find a player to take the strain off Nemanja Matic, who signed a new contract at the club this week.

Late last month is was revealed that Thiago, who was seemingly on United’s radar during the ill-fated David Moyes era, which lasted just nine months or so. The player was heavily linked to the Old Trafford club with rumours rife about the club close to signing there player. However, he signed for Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich instead.

It was reported that Thiago begged United to sign him, which seems ludicrous at the time with United struggling to sign players, chasing Cesc Fabregas and failing to sign the player, who at the time did not want to leave Barcelona. United then signed Marouane Fellaini, on deadline day for £27.5 million, around £4 million more than they could have paid earlier that summer.

It was a poor time to be a United supporter with Moyes seemingly out of his depth and struggling to bring any names into the club. United did add some midfield magic in January 2014, signing Juan Mata from Chelsea and it seemed to be a Sir Alex Ferguson signing more than a Moyes signing. It is said that Thiago is still keen to sign for United. I guess we shall see if that is true, and if United are interested in him.

Manchester United urged to sign Corentin Tolisso from Bayern Munich; agent rubbishes rumours

Manchester United have been urged to make a move for perfect transfer target, Bayern Munich’s Corentin Tolisso. Reports in France has suggested that United hold an interest in the player, who has been injured this season. A suggestion has even been made that United have spoken to Bayern about a switch for the player this summer.

The Bundesliga leaders are happy to sell the player this summer, as long as a £31 million fee is agreed. That might sound good at this moment in time, but his injury record is problematic, with the player last playing a game at the end of February, before the coronavirus pandemic suspended world football. He probably won’t play again this season.

The 25-year-old had been a regular in the side this season, prior to his injury, making a total of 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and five assists. Former United right-back, Rafael da Silva, who played with Tolisso at Lyon, told United to sign the player, saying:

“One of the best midfielder I play with, I think will be perfect for Manchester United. Hope he goes there.”

However, the reports seem to be rather premature with the agent of the player speaking out, especially against the comments made by United’s former right-back. Eric Castagnino has seemingly dashed any transfer to United based upon what he has said, which could end this rumour almost as quickly as it started. Castagnino said:

“I’m not having any talks with Manchester United. Corentin [Tolisso] is currently injured and his return to the pitch is currently a top priority.”

The French international is out for the remainder of the season, unless he can gain some fitness to play in the UEFA Champions League when it resumes, which is expected in August at some point. Maybe he will play a part in the domestic season, depending on when it finishes in Germany. I guess the player and his agent will know more.

The links to another midfielder do seem premature from a United point of view. Currently, United has Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay, Fred, Nemanja Matic, let alone the likes of Andreas Pereira, James Garner and Dylan Levitt. There would be little space in the squad for another central midfielder, unless a player or two was leaving.

Philippe Coutinho offered to Manchester United; Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not interested – reports

Manchester United have reportedly been offered Barcelona attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho, according to reports. The former Liverpool man has been on loan with Bundesliga side, Bayern Munich for the 2019/20 season and is currently returning from surgery and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

It is suggested that the Old Trafford club were contacted so they could speak to the player, presumably through his representatives, but current manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has turned down the opportunity, cutting United’s interested in the player with immediate effect. United were once interested in the Brazilian, but during Jose Mourinho’s time at the club.

ESPN has reported that Solskjaer, who is seeking attacking reinforcements this summer with the likes of Jadon Sancho, Moussa Dembele and Timo Werner being linked to the club. However, Coutinho, who has seemingly failed to shine since leaving Liverpool, is not the player the manager will be seeking – which is great news.

The 27-year-old will probably still have suitors from the Premier League, however, it must be somewhat an insult that United are not interested in the player. Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Leicester City hold an interest, which shows how much the player has fallen in stature, even if Newcastle end up Saudi-owned this year.

A few years ago, if United were offered such a player, the clubs executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward would have made a move for him, bringing him into the club for a high transfer fee, with high wages and wondering why things failed, just like they did with Angel Di Maria and Alexis Sanchez, just to name a few.

It shows that Solskjaer has a plan for United, which should be respected, allowing the Norwegian manager to get on with things, as United have changed direction since the days of David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, and Mourinho. Things are looking to be a but more exciting, despite problems with squad size, fitness and injury. Patience is a virtue and all that.

Manchester United contact agent of Philippe Coutinho, along with Chelsea, Leicester City and Newcastle United – reports

Manchester United have apparently contacted the agent of former Liverpool winger, Philippe Coutinho, according to reports. It is not the first time that the Old Trafford club has been linked to the Brazilian, although nothing seems to have come of the previous reports, which personally is a good thing.

Spanish news outlet, Mundo Deportivo has reported that Chelsea would seem to be the player’s first choice, if he was to depart Barcelona this summer, currently with him on loan with Bundesliga leaders, Bayern Munich. It is also suggested that Newcastle United, who are supposedly being taken over by the Saudi Arabian’s are ‘unofficially’ interested.

The 27-year-old is not currently fit to play, after ankle surgery and his recovery might come too late for him to make an appearance before the end of the season, which will be running late this season. The Bundesliga returned last weekend with the Munich club beating Union Berlin 2-0 at the An der Alten Försterei stadion.

Bayern have the opportunity to make the Brazilian’s loan spell at the club permanent, however, they seem unwilling to meet the £100 million price tag set by the Catalan club, which would be a fee that many top clubs decide will be too high for a player who has not really been in great form since leaving Liverpool a few years back.

This season, before the coronavirus pandemic suspended world football, Coutinho made a total of 32 appearances, playing in the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and the UEFA Champions League, scoring nine goals and eight assists. For £100 million, a similar fee that Borussia Dortmund would demand for Jadon Sancho, United could get so much more.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may or may not be interested in the player and this could be, I am hoping, just a rumour to get clicks to news websites. I do not think Coutinho would be a good fit for United. At Liverpool, before seemingly forcing his exit from the club, he seemed to be a tremendous player, scoring 54 goals and 45 assists in 201 appearances.

United will be seeking new additions to the squad this summer, but the financial repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic may see many big moves not happen, which is something that the clubs executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward has warned in recent weeks, with the true figure of the problem being announced on Thursday.

United have been linked with Jadon Sancho or Borussia Dortmund, Jack Grealish of Aston Villa, Mousse Dembele of Lyon, Wassim Ben Yedder of AS Monaco and even the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot of Juventus, who only arrived at the Italian club, as free agents, last summer. Solskjaer clearly has his eye on incoming transfers.

However, in this instance, I don’t see anything solid on the links to Coutinho but felt the need to write about it, as there will. no doubt, be many more rumours circulating before the Premier League resumes and the transfer window opens, whenever that may be. I don’t think we will see Coutinho at the Theatre of Dreams in the famous United shirt though.

Manchester United to make transfer bid for Bayern Munich’s French midfielder – reports

Manchester United are reportedly preparing to make a fresh approach for Bayern Munich midfielder Corentin Tolisso, according to reports. It is reported that United tried to sign the player on loan in January, which was unsuccessful. As the player has struggled to setting at the Allianz Arena, now could be the time to test the water for a transfer.

Tolisso moved from Lyon to Bayern in the summer of 2017 for a fee of €41.5 million with a reported €6 million in add-ons. The player suffered a Cruciate Ligament Rupture months after helping France win the 2018 FIFA World Cup, missing 38 matches for his club that season and has played a bit-part role at the club this season.

Bayern were seemingly not interested in reducing their midfield strength during the January transfer window. Despite this, United are still seemingly keen on attempting to sign the 25-year-old, who will turn 26 in August. With Paul Pogba rumoured to still want to leave the club, reinforcements in midfield will be needed.

United could be the club that the midfielder could resurrect his career at. His form has seemingly taken a dip in form recently but during his first season at the Bavarian club, he made 40 appearances, scoring 10 goals and seven assists. He could add something to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side if there was availability for him at the club, post-Pogba of course.

Tolisso made just four appearances, scoring one goal but his season was destroyed by injury. During the current season, the French midfielder has played 24 times, scoring three goals and five assists, which could be all for him this season seeing as he had ankle surgery last month and as the Bundesliga has resumed this weekend, he might not play again.

He would need to prove his fitness if United were to make a move for him though as they will not want to bring in a player that is not ready to play for the club, whenever the 2020/21 seasons starts. United have been linked to a fair few players already and the 2019/20 season has not yet resumed, and might not depending on what happens on Monday.

Reports state that Tolisso will not be stopped from leaving by Bayern, who are seeking to raise the cash to sign Manchester City winger Leroy Sane, who was heavily linked to the club last summer and suffered an Cruciate Ligament Rupture during the FA Community Shield at the start of the season – similar to the injury Tolisso had last season.

Solskjaer will be seeking to continue his rebuild of the Old Trafford club this summer after bringing in Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Daniel James, Harry Maguire, and Bruno Fernandes to the club over the past year with United’s fortunes seemingly changing for the better. This summer, United have been linked with many players already.

The Red Devils are tipped to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, Jack Grealish from Aston Villa and Jude Bellingham from Birmingham City. If Pogba ends up leaving the Theatre of Dreams, Solskjaer will need another midfielder, which is where Tolisso, or others who have ben linked to the club would come in. We shall see what happens.

Ratings: Solskjaer, Yorke, Butt, Saha and Beckham score in 5-0 victory over Bayern Munich

Manchester United beat Bayern Munich 5-0 in a thrilling Treble Reunion at the Theatre of Dreams on Sunday afternoon. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Dwight Yorke, Nicky Butt, Louis Saha and David Beckham all scored goals in the match with Jesper Blomqvist assisting twice, Saha, Jonathan Greening and Karel Poborsky each getting one assist.

The opening goal of the match was scored by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer three minutes after he replaced Andy Cole. David Beckham squared the ball into Dwight Yorke, whose effort was parried away. Jesper Blomqvist then picked up the ball, played it to Solskjaer, who tapped the ball in to put his side 1-0 up.

United did score against through Paul Scholes by Gary Neville was offside and the goal was ruled out. Dwight Yorke doubled United’s lead after Jesper Blomqvist played a cross into the box with the former Trinidad and Tobago forward slotting home from close-range. This United side has brought the excitement back to Old Trafford after a tough season.

Nicky Butt scored the third goal for United in the 79th minute of there match, minutes after Teddy Sheringham fired wide of the target, The midfielder began the move with a long-ball to Louis Saha, who then slotted the ball back to Butt for him to bury his shot into the back of the net, showing this Bayern side who the boss was in Manchester.

A fourth goal soon followed, this time with Saha scoring. Karel Poborsky played the ball upfield to Jonathan Greening, who remained onside, breaking forward, delivering a low cross to the Frenchman who made it 4-0 to United, with no reply from the German side seeming all that possible, which would have made Sir Alex Ferguson happy.

United then made it five with David Beckham scoring in front of the Old Trafford faithful in the Stretford End. Poborsky was once again involved, seeing Beckham run forward, onside, putting in a through ball for Becks to round a player and beat the goalkeeper from close-range, burying the ball high into the back of the net at the near post. What a thrilling encounter.

Men of the Match: David Beckham and Nicky Butt

In a game which saw Gary Neville, David Beckham and Nicky Butt all play 90 minutes in their return to the `Theatre of Dreams. All three played a part in the game but Neville will rue being offside which stopped Paul Scholes from scoring in the first half. Both Beckham and Butt god their own goals and drove United forward to win this game. A performance that some of the current first teamers will need to look at in order to bring the same desire next season.

Goals: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 5′, Dwight Yorke 30′, Nicky Butt 79′, Louis Saha 85′, David Beckham 90′

Assists: Jesper Blomqvist 5′, 30′, Louis Saha 79′, Jonathan Greening 85′, Karel Poborsky 90′

Manchester United: Schmeichel (van der Gouw 35′ (Pilkington 74′); G. Neville, Stam (Brown 68′), Johnsen (Berg 80′), Irwin (Silvestre 57′); Beckham, Butt, Scholes (Greening 59′), Blomqvist (Poborsky 46′); Yorke (Saha 40′), Cole (Solskjaer 1′ (Sheringham 27′ (May 80′)

Peter Schmeichel: The Great Dane started this match, as he did in 1999. Schmeichel made some good saves during his time on the pitch of his return to Old Trafford 20 year after helping his side reach the promised land. It was good to see him back in goal for the club. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gary Neville: The Salford City part owner and Sky Sports pundit started the match and after Schmeichel was substituted in the 35th minute, was given the captains armband. Scholes scored United’s second goal but because Neville was offside, it was ruled out. Neville played 90 minutes in the game and was involved in the final goal, scored by Beckham, even if the midfielder did not square the ball to him. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jaap Stam: The Dutchman showed his sheer grit and determination, putting in an excellent sliding tackle of old in the 13th minute of the match to deny Bayern Munich from getting a goalscoring opportunity. Seeing Stam perform his defensive duties made me sick to think that United currently have Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, who after nearly a decade at the club have not managed to have a presence like Stam. The big Dutchman was replaced by Wes Brown in the 68th minute. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ronny Johnsen: The 49-year-old Norwegian was another player who turned back the years to face Bayern Munich twenty years after that night in Barcelona. Johnsen played well, partnered with Jaap Stam, who looked like he could still play competitive football in the Premier League. Johnsen was replaced by Henning Berg in the 80th minute of the match. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Denis Irwin: The Irish left-back, despite being 53, rolled back the years against Bayern Munich 20 years after helping his team win the treble. Irwin played well at left-back and helped clear his defensive line which stopped Bayern from getting involved in the match for the majority of the game, of which he played 57 minutes of. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

David Beckham: The art of crossing the ball from the flanks has been missed at Old Trafford and beyond in a Manchester United team. The 44-year-old showed us how it was done then, still having it now. The United legend showed that age was just a number for him. I love seeing him play in United shirts and miss the days he was marauding on the right flank with Ryan Giggs on the left. Those were the days. Nothing like that has been seen at United for years. Beckham signed off this great day with a goal of his own, onside, the ball played from Poborsky, rounding a player and beating the keeper at the near post. Amazing. Right in front of the Stretford End. To play 90 minutes and show up the current crop of players will be a satisfying end to the day for Becks. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nicky Butt: The United academy director turned back the clock to start this match, twenty years after seeing his side beat Bayern Munich on that night in Barcelona. Partnered with Scholes from the start of the game, the former England international played well and did what he needed to do. Butt won a free-kick in Beckham territory just before the 70th minute of the match, sadly it was not turned into a third goal of the game. The midfielder scored the third goal of the game, assisted by Louis Saha in the 79th minute. Late in the game, with United on the attack, Butt tried a bicycle kick but missed the target, unfortunately. Playing 90 minutes was admirable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Paul Scholes: The formidable midfielder turned back the years against Bayern Munich, a match he did not play in 20 years ago because he was suspended. Despite the low pace of the game, Scholes did well and found a goal, which would have put Unted 2-0 up but Gary Neville was offside and the goal was ruled out. Scholes will not be happy with that. Scholes played 59 minutes in the game, replaced by Jonathan Greening. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jesper Blomqvist: The 45-year-old Swede got the assist for the opening goal of the match after David Beckham crossed in to Dwight Yorke, failing to score and the ball fell to Blomqvist who passed to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who buried his shot into the back of the net. Blomqvist managed two assists in the first half of the game but did not start the second half with Karel Poborsky replacing him. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dwight Yorke: The smiling assassin nearly opened the scoring for United in the fifth minute but managed to double United’s lead in the 30th minute after Blomqvist crossed the ball into the box with the Trinidian slotting home from close-range, making what he did seem simple. Yorke was replaced in the 40th minute by Louis Saha after he could feel his hamstring. The smiler had a good game and it was good to see him score again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Andy Cole: The former United striker started the match but was replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the first minute. t was good to see him play for the club again but I would have liked to see more of him. He did well after what he has gone through with his health. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: The Manchester United manager replaced Andy Cole in the first minute of the match. Solskjaer opened the scoring in the fifth minute after a strong start by United. David Beckham squared the ball into Dwight Yorke, who fired towards goal with the Norwegian mopping up after a pass from Jesper Blomqvist. Solskjaer was replaced by Sheringham in the 27th minute of the match. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Teddy Sheringham: The striker replaced Solskjaer in the 27th minute of the match. Sheringham had a chance soon after coming on but Bayern goalkeeper Hans Jorg Butt made a great save to deny him after Beckham delivered a great ball to the forward, heading his goalbound effort which was put behind by Butt. The striker had a great chance to score in the 74th minute after Poborsky played a good ball into the box, the Champions League final goalscorer hitting it wide. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Raimond van der Gouw: The Dutch goalkeeper replaced Schmeichel in the 35th minute of the match with the Dane seemingly unable to continue because of his back. The Dutchman played well for United, despite this Bayern side not being all that fit or good in front of goal. He played until the 74th minute with Kevin Pilkington replacing him. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Louis Saha: The former French international replaced Dwight Yorke in the 40th minute of the match. The Frenchman played well up top for United playing the entire second half, plus five minutes of the first. He got an assist for Nicky Butt’s 79th-minute goal, getting a goal himself in the 85th minute, putting United 4-0 up. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Karel Poborsky: The Czech winger replaced Jesper Blomqvist at the start of the second half. Poborsky was largely underrated at United but the emergence of one David Beckham called time to his career at the club, playing just two seasons with United. He was not a treble winner with the club, leaving in the summer of 1998. The Czech winger player a cracking ball into Sheringham in the 74th minute but the former England striker hit his effort wide. Poborsky got his assist, playing a great ball to David Beckham in the final minute with the Old Trafford legend firing in front of the Stretford End. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mikael Silvestre: The French defender replaced Denis Irwin in the 57th minute of the match. Playing at left-back, Silvestre did what he needed to do in order to stop Bayern from getting any advantage from the game, despite being 2-0 down. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jonathan Greening: The former United midfielder replaced Paul Scholes in the 59th minute of the match. The midfielder played some good football for United after replacing Scholes and got involved in the fourth goal, avoiding offside to square the ball into Saha for him to find United’s fourth goal of the game. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wes Brown: The former United and England defender replaced Jaap Stam in the 68th minute of the match. Brown played well int he victory, not that Bayern held much threat throughout much of the match. It was good to see some of these players again, especially after a poor season which saw some poor football and some much poorer results. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kevin Pilkington: The former United goalkeeper replaced Raimond van Der Gouw in the 74th minute of the match. The third goalkeeper of the game to keep a clean sheet. Bayern posed no threat towards the end of the game. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Henning Berg: The Norwegian defender replaced his compatriot Ronny Johnsen in the 80th minute of the match, just after Nicky Butt scored United’s third goal of the game. Berg played well for the remaining ten minutes of the match, helping keep Bayern at bay with United ending on a high. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

David May: The 48-year-old English defender replaced Teddy Sheringham in the 80th minute of the match against Bayern Munich. May played in the strikers’ role for the final few minutes of the match. Twenty years later, the man who stole the limelight in Barcelona, got to play in the reunion match and play as the striker. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Confirmed Starting XI: Yorke and Cole lead the line just as they did in Barcelona; Beckham starts; Sheringham and Solskjaer on the bench

Twenty years today Manchester United achieved the impossible dream, winning an unprecedented treble. On the 16th May 1999, on beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 with goals from David Beckham and Andy Cole cancelling Les Ferdinand’s opener, United secured the Premier League title; the clubs twelfth league title, their fifth Premier League title.

Six days later, United beat Newcastle United 2-0 with goals from Paul Scholes and Teddy Sheringham to lift the FA Cup for the tenth time in the clubs history, completing a domestic league and cup double; the third time in the clubs history (1993/94 and 1995/96) but this one could turn into an unprecedented treble – the first time an English club had done so.

Manchester United:

G. Neville, Stam, Johnsen, Irwin;

Beckham, Butt, Scholes, Blomqvist;

Yorke, Cole

Pilkington, Van der Gouw; Berg, Brown, May, Silvestre; Greening, Poborsky; Saha, Sheringham, Solskjaer

This match will mark the final match of the treble winning season; the 1999 UEFA Champions League final. It was played on the 26 May 1999 at the Nou Camp in Barcelona. United ended up beating Bayern Munich 2-1, conceding a goal which was scored by Mario Basler in the sixth minute after United gave away a free-kick. The German side could have doubled, tripled and even quadrupled their lead in the match.

In stoppage time, United won a corner one minute into added time. David Beckham took it, poked the ball into the box with Ryan Giggs getting a touch on the ball and Teddy Sheringham slotting home. Name on the trophy. United seemed set for extra time. However, that is not what happened.

United won another corner three minutes into stoppage time. Again Beckham took the set-piece. Beckham, into Sheringham, and Solskjaer has won it. Manchester United had reached the promised land. Football, bloody hell. And there it was, the treble was complete. This was a great ten days in May back in 1999, twenty years ago and it still feels like yesterday.
